Do Not Play Songs Playlist

Shelby, on April 12, 2021 at 6:44 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 2 20

Hi!

My DJ is asking for a "do not play" list of songs for the reception and I want to know what y'all would have on that list if it were your reception. What songs do you hate to hear at weddings?

The top song on my Do Not Play list is definitely the Chicken Dance. There are a few other line dances that I'm not crazy about, but we're still putting together our list.

Also check out this discussion for more ideas of what else to include on the Do Not Play list: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/what-songs-are-on-your-do-not-play-list/aa7044eab5a24bbe.html

We only had one song on our do not playlist which was Benny and The Jets because my husband's name is Benjamin and he hates the nickname Benny and he knew if we didn't ask the DJ not to play it his friends would just to mess with him. Our DJ also said we wouldn't play songs that require certain dance moves like the Chicken Dance or Hokey Pokey unless we specifically asked him to.

Me too. I heard the Chicken Dance is one of the most banned songs at weddings (along with the Cha-cha Slide, Cotton-Eye Joe, stuff like that).

My FH and I told the band no "group dances" like line dances, cha cha slide, wobble, chicken dance, macarena, etc. There are a few random songs that are popular that we don't like like Happy so added those as well.

YESSSSS ALL OF THESE! We are not doing any sort of line dance songs or any song that has a cheesy dance that goes with it (cha-cha slide, Macarena, YMCA, chicken dance, etc.). We also requested they not play any country or classical music during the reception because neither genre gets people out on the dance floor (in our circle anyway).

"TO THE WINDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW, TO DA WALL!"

I hate hearing this at weddings. I hate inevitably hearing the drunk bridal party shout out "AWW SKEET SKEET MUTHAF^^KA! AWWW SKEET SKEET GAWDAMN!!"

    So very cringey.

I also put Chicken Dance on my do not play, although I have literally never seen it played at a wedding, so now I wonder if any DJ would actually ever do such a thing.

Macarena is another big nope from me. The song is about a woman cheating on her boyfriend with two of his friends while he gets shipped off to the army. Not a wedding song.

The "group dance" songs - Cha Cha Slide, Electric Slide, Cotton Eyed Joe (which I never knew had a "dance"), Wobble - depends on the crowd for me. I've seen weddings where they were great fun, because pretty much everyone participated. I've also seen weddings where it was just uncomfortable because only 3-4 people stayed on the dance floor. They were do not plays at my wedding (except the Wobble, which hadn't been released yet when I got married) because I had a small guest list consisting mostly of people over 40 who would never have danced to them, but my husband's best friend played all of them at his wedding and the dance floor was full the entire time. So, know your crowd and decide if you think this is fun or not.

Finally, "3" by Britney Spears. I know it's a funky beat and it's fun. It is also very uncomfortable for a wedding guest who pays attention to more than about five words.

Ughhhh that first song!!! I also am not a fan of hearing that one. Unfortunately, my fiance refuses to put it on our Do Not Play list, lol.

I banned every song from a 90s/00s boy band.

Yes, even if DH liked it.

They make me want to tear my ears off every time I hear them.

We also banned music from some musicians we felt had... uh... problematic pasts, even if we like the songs (R. Kelly, etc.).

My only Do No Play right now is Don't Stop Believin' by Journey I absolutely HATE that song it's way too overplayed for me as a Journey Fan when they have sooooo many other better songs lol My DJ actually said that song is on a lot of peoples Do Not Play's when I said that he was going to think I was crazy for not wanting to play that one.

    Hi Shelby:
For us: The Chicken Dance song (of course), the Cha Cha Slide, Macarena, all Village people songs, Britney + similar singers (Pink, Aguilera ...).

Oh my god, people actually play Get Low at weddings? I loved it at high school dances, but a wedding where your grandma could be listening?! Crazy

Oh yes. And I'm not kidding you when I say it ALWAYS played out the same way: the DJ would "blank" out the profanity/objectionable lyrics, and the bridal party - bridesmaids in particular - would always scream them out at the top of their lungs. Every. Time.

It is definitely at the top of my "loathe" list for weddings.

I have in fact seen a DJ play the Chicken Dance at a wedding and it was horrific. The wedding had a lot of small kids, but it was mostly adults out on the floor and it was just so awkward to see.

'Let it Go' is one a lot of DJ's play if there's kids present, so I'll put that on a DNP list. I feel like it would almost make sense to do a 'don't play requests from these people' list for some groups though lol. Take pictures from FB and send them/print them out for your DJ with a note of 'nothing this person requests, thx'.

    #1 Old Town Road 🤮🤮🤮
Also, a lot listed above. No R. Kelly or Michael Jackson, no Macarena, Chicken dance, Cha cha slide , Sweet Child of Mine, or Sangria … I think that’s it!
