Do I tip my Seamstress?

danana1773, on August 18, 2017 at 4:24 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 22

Hi everyone, I've read a few different things as far as etiquette goes on this one so I wanted to get some opinions/advice here. My seamstress works out of her home, and has no employees. I'm paying her $600 (cash) for alterations on my dress. Is it appropriate to tip in this situation? If so, how much?

If you're already paying her $600 in cash I wouldn't tip her.

I've never tipped on dry cleaning or tailoring services, so don't plan to for my dress alterations.

I am a seamstress and did a ton of bridal alterations also working from my home. I never expected tips but was totally thrilled when I received them!! There is a lot more work and time involved in doing alterations than you might think so I took it as the highest form of flattery that I did an amazing job when I received one! It is entirely up to you. :-)

Eh, I'll be the unpopular opinion. I also used a seamstress who worked independently out of her home, and my alterations were relatively inexpensive--in the $120-$150 range. I don't remember the exact number. I gave her another $20 or $30. I don't know if it was "necessary," but I was happy with her work, and she seemed to appreciate it.

No need to tip. I think there was another bride on here once who tipped her seamstress and came back to say it was awkward bc the lady said it's typically not done, but then she felt silly taking the money back.

Christine, it's really great to get the perspective from a seamstress. I've decided that I'm going to bring my future MIL to have her dress altered, and I'll definitely be tipping her when I pay during that transaction.

    Thanks everyone! :-)

We paid a LOT for alterations and Altho I LOVED the work she did, I didn't tip. I had to make several trips there (I lived OOT) and alterations weren't complete until 2 days before my wedding but she was very accommodating.

Honestly, I don't really believe in tipping so I would say no. You paid for the service so why would a tip be needed? (That's my thoughts) I know many people don't think this way.

Just my perspective as another seamstress who works out of her home. It is difficult for brides to imagine the detail involved in altering a wedding gown since they are specifically constructed with many layers and things like boning which need to come out before even beginning. This is probably the biggest investment for the wedding after the venue. I love the brides I have worked with and many times there was non billed time in doing a lot of final touches and things like steaming. I have been flattered when many included a tip as they paid the final bill. I guess I would compare it to other service jobs such as bar tending, officiant and servers who are tipped.
