Do i need to have place cards if i have this? (pic attached) 1
I am not sure what the point is of people taking a placard with their name on it and bringing it to their table - this is what I am using for people to find their seats. Do I need a individual placard for each guest if I am using this “find your seat” board?

No you wouldn't need an individual place card since you plan on doing this. The only issue I could see if this is that people are all going to be crowded around it trying to figure out where you want them to sit whereas place cards are normally in alphabetical order and guests can very easily find their name and grab their card rather than crowding around each other searching for their name.

Placards are good if you have wait staff bring meals out. Typically the meal, which was specified on the RSVP, is on the card. We are having a buffet and doing a find your seat like in the picture.

Ahhh that’s a good point - we are doing a buffet too and people aren’t picking out their meals so that’s a good point

Individual place cards tend to be much easier for guests and the couple. From a guest standpoint, they find their name and grab the card. People get distracted all the time with chatting on the way to their table so they can refer to the card in hand and continue. They are also color coded for the catering staff to tell who gets what meal. For the couple, individual placecards are easier to work with if you need to move people around last second. In that case, a chart as shown is skipped entirely.

A chart as shown is often very small and hard to read unless you are right up next to it, it's common for crowds to gather. I don't have bad eyesight but I could not read the one in the picture. Never mind being short so I wouldn't be able to read the top row. Also, people will and do forget their table assignments. Also when putting a large chart together, it you make a spelling error or decide to move someone, you have to start over from scratch.

Buffet/stations still needs assigned seating. You just would not have them color coded to differentiate meal choices.

I think you wouldn’t need individual place cards since you have that. Where did you find that?

Someone was selling it on Facebook so I took a screenshot of it and decided to make it myself! It’s drying right now! If you want one I can make it for you!

Depends how food is served IMO. If self served or all the same meal--go for it.

Nope! This is what I’m doing! Unless your having a plated meal where the venue wants meals in the back of place card for service, no need.

From the caterer and guest point of view, even without a need for coding meal choices, it is still hard for waitstaff to deliver quiet, unobtrusive service when every interaction stats with trying to get their attention " hey you" style. So much nicer to quietly ask what someone needs, or offer something, if you know a name and title, or can refer to their placecard. It is nice when bare acquaintances ( even bride and groom on table rounds) look at a face or two that are familiar, get the names , which jogs the memory, oh, these are bride's Aunt Martha and Uncle John Whiteside, so you can start a conversation, like introducing your hubby to the aunt and uncle who let bride's girlfriends use their cottage, or whatever memory you have. Worse is when you knew them years ago, were introduced earlier tonight, and promptly forgot their names. Nicer than name tags.

No. Your seating chart is sufficient.

The most recent weddings I've been to don't have place cards, and just a table numbers and then seating chart similar to the picture you attached. I think I'll also be doing something simlar.
