Do I need a wedding program?

Colleen, on March 25, 2016 at 10:05 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

We are having a short ceremony on same site as our reception. We are having a small wedding party (just MOH and BM). We do plan to incorporate ring warming and two readings (including a surprise poem my BF is writing just for us-so excited!). Ceremony will be followed by cocktail hour, cake cutting, dinner, first dance, dancing and likely (weather permitting) wish lanterns at night.

Since the dinner menu is not yet finalized and invitations are out (venue offers just one dinner option, with duo entrée), I was thinking about making menu cards and placing on the table or on each plate.

So...should I print a program? If so, would it be ok to just put on the back of the menu card?

Truth is you don't need it and if it is not going to be present during the ceremony, there's really no need to put it on the back of the menu.

That being said, I'm doing them. Its a preference thing.

    They are completely optional.

You don't need to do them, people generally get the idea of what happens at a wedding. I was going to skip programs but we decided we want our guests to sing a hymn with us so we put the lyrics in our program.

They're optional. We aren't doing them as we feel it is a waste of our time and will just be left behind or thrown away.

Programs aren't necessary, especially for smaller shorter weddings. Ours falls into this category and we aren't doing programs.

If it's a short ceremony then you can skip them.

We aren't doing a program. We are having a short ceremony with pictures and reception directly following.

No you don't need them. I'm debating whether I'm having them, but probably not.

I wouldn't do them, they aren't needed and can turn into a waste of money. The only weddings I have found a program necessary for is if it is in another language and requires a translation, or if there are readings that the guests need to follow along with (e.g. some Episcopal services).

We're not doing programs, I don't think they're necessary. I don't think they would be useful on the back of the menu card because by the time they see that the ceremony would likely be over.

    No programs.

Our venue also does the dual entree. We're going to do a few menus cards for the tables so guests know what they're eating since they don't get to choose

The program is for the ceremony so I don't see how you would be able to print them on the same paper as the menu cards (which are for the reception).

In general I think programs are a waste unless you have some ceremony traditions you want to explain, or you have people you want to honor. I'm skipping the programs for my wedding. They're not worth the effort for me. At weddings I've been to, they just end up being left on the seats after the ceremony because people don't know what to do with them.

No program! It causes a traffic jam for people to pick up or read, they're so busy chatting they hardly glance at it, then it becomes awkward finding a place to toss it on the way to drinks and hors d'oeuvres afterward.

The only time I've found one useful is because it was made into a fan and the day was very warm. Or when I was planning my own wedding and wanted to use one of their readings.

I'm skipping the program. Having a program board when guest first walk in instead. It will have the parents, groomsmen, bridesmaids, ring bearer, flower girl, and officiant names.

I loved my programs, I mean LOVED! But we had over a hundred left over. Not everyone takes one and if they do they glance at it and that's it. If you do anything, I would do a poster like someone suggested above. I wanted to be able to say it wasn't a waste of money but it really was.
