Do I Apply for Marriage License in County I Live in or Getting Married in?

Julie, on February 7, 2017 at 12:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

I live in Dayton, OH, but am getting married in Grand Rapids, MI. I can't find a clear answer on where I have to get my license. It seems like it should be MI because that is where I am getting married, but I am a resident of Dayton OH, so shouldn't I get my license here? I'm so confused! Thanks in advance for the help!! Smiley smile

Normally it's the county you are being married in, unless this varies by state.

Hi all who have commented thus far! I have been Googling for a while, and nothing has given me a clear answer, which is why I am asking. Fiddlin, thanks for the reminder. I have been messing around with this profile, trying to get a picture to show up in the correct spot. I finally figure it out! Thanks!

9 times out of 10 you need to apply for a license in the county/state where you're getting married. You also need to look into how long the process takes and how long they're good for. In Anne Arundel county (MD) you have to wait two days to use it and it's good for 6 months.

ETA: flightyflutist, you made me laugh hysterically lmao.

In Michigan it has to be whatever county you live in I believe. But I would just call the county clerk in your state or even in GR I'm sure they could help a ton.

I'm pretty sure it's based on the state you live in. You should call your local court or consult with your officiant.

It should be the county you are getting married in. Remember that some places have a waiting period. In my county, you can use the marriage license for 90 days after obtaining it and there is a 3 day waiting period which means you have to obtain the license more than 3 days before the wedding. The time periods will differ county to county.

Summit County resident, I was told the county you live in. Definitely call the county clerk in both areas and double check.

According to my county website, it's the county you live in (though I do not live in Michigan). I would go specifically to your county website and look up marriage information. My county has a small "destination wedding" blurb that explains the rules.

eta: I somehow missed that you live in Ohio. I would check with both counties.

So I called and you apply in any County you are getting married in and take it back with you to your home town. That's what the clerk told me.

In Missouri, it's any county in the state, doesn't matter if it's where you live, where you're getting married, or some other random county. Call your recorder of deeds, or whoever does the marriage licenses in Ohio, and ask.

I called the county I'm getting married in to ask what their policy is. They said I can get my license in any county in CA. Just depends on the county. Call the county you're getting married in and see what their policy is.

Not sure what the deal is with all the snarkyness, but definitely call both county clerks Julie. The requirements for each will vary. We are getting our license from where we are getting married, not where we live.

I'd just call the county clerk in the county where you will be getting married!

When I was looking at this online there were 3 different government websites for the county clerk that all listed slightly different requirements for legal documents. I just gave them a call directly and they were really helpful!
