Do hair combs actually stay in your hair?

C + R, on January 30, 2014 at 9:24 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

I bought a beautiful hair comb to wear on my wedding day from eBay. It came in the mail yesterday, and I was SO excited to try it out!! However, it's so heavy and my hair is so thin/fine that I'm worried it won't stay in. Has anyone worn a hair comb for their wedding? Was it heavy/did it stay in? Are there any tricks to making sure it doesn't fall out?? I'm on a budget so I'd rather just use what I have, but I'm worried I should buy a clip or something else to use as an alternative!

I bought a hair comb similar to that but mine is a bit smaller...But I also have VERY thick hair so im usualy good with things like that...you could probably use some bobby pins to hold it inside. Im guessing your going to have someone do your hair? they should be able to get it to stay!

During my hair trial, my stylist said she would add a few bobby pins to my hair clip and my veil to ensure that they stay in. I think you should be fine with bobby pins, especially if you have someone who's familiar with putting in hair clips.

I'm worried about this too as my veil is on a comb. My MOH had it for her wedding and it is my "something borrowed" - at her wedding it did keep slipping and falling out all day, although she has thinner, straighter hair than mine. I think you can backcomb the hair underneath to give it more texture to grip to?

I have very thin hair and my hair dresser basically teased part of my hair and added bobby pins so the comb would stay. I even shook my hair around a bit and it stayed. If you arent having a hair stylist do your hair, I would experiment with hair spray, bobby pins and teasing.

I used a pretty big and heavy comb and as soon as it would be put in it would slide out. On the day of what my MUA/hairstylist did was to put a little bit of hairspray where the comb was going through to go so that it would be a little stiff and stick better. After that she went pin crazy and pinned it down wherever she could. I had about 10-15 pins in my hair, it felt a little weird at first but as the day went on I got used to it. I liked that my hairstylist did that because I didn't feel like it was loose or was falling, maybe this will help you too since you have fine hair. I think something else you can do is tease the area a little and then put the comb and pin it into place.

    P. S. I forgot to add that she made sure the area where the comb was gonna go was super curly, she said it would help the comb not slip.

I have very thin hair as well. I just received mine in the mail last week. I plan to wear a low updo and have the comb on top of it (like my picture below where I was playing around with it). I love the side being pulled up like Shelley, but my hair doesn't hold curl very well so I know that style wouldn't look right on my wedding day. I had no issue with it falling out... although I have a feeling hairspray and bobby pins will be my best friend that day!

Your hair stylist will generally know how to put them in so they stay.

My hair, no matter how thick or thin (it seems to change at different times of the month) is really slippery so, unless a professional is putting it in for me, I need to use extra kirby grips to hold it in.

My veil had a comb that attached to my hair. I also have pretty thin/fine hair. Just like the other girls mentioned my hairstylist used a bunch of bobby pins to help the comb stay in place. That thing didn't move for like 8 hours until my girls took it out just before the reception.

It helps if you scoop your hair up, with the teeth of the comb pointing towards your hair and the spine in your fingers, then flip the spine up towards the top of your head and the teeth downward, in a rolling motion. (It sounds more complex than it is). I wear hair combs almost every day, and that's the best way to anchor them. If your hair is really fine, then a few bobby pins will help.

For anyone still shopping for a hair comb please check out the website below. All the hair combs are made by hand with glass stones, pearls, swarovski crystals, rhinestones, and more. They will not fall out of your hair and are absolutely gorgeous. They are also not mass produced like the ones you see on etsy or ebay. They are made right here in the US.

They'll make it work. Leave it to your hair stylist. I have a flower clip that I'm trying to use also. That has it's own hair clip attached, but I'm sure it'll need a little extra support. My veil has a hair comb also that will most likely be bobby pinned in. I have fine/thin hair as well. Trust your stylist. That's their job. They'll make it work.

If you're doing your own hair, the easiest way to keep it in fine hair is to backcomb (tease) the location, smooth it over (lightly, you still need that cushion!) and stick the comb in. All those teeth need are hairs to grip, and backcombing thickens up the hair enough to grip away. Otherwise have your stylist mess with it, but communicate your concerns. Whenever I do bridal styles, I drill for movement details (are you breakdancing down the aisle? Do you need meteor-proof hairspray? Are you a wall-flower? Is this going to take place in a wind tunnel? And yes I do ask these for real! lol) because oftentimes the bride and maids don't think about movement, just photos. So tell your stylist the level of dancing, choreography, how long the aisle is, how long you'll stand still, is it outdoors or indoors, the expected weather, etc so she can make sure your hair STAYS! TEASING will be your best friend!!! A trick for all of you (if you guys don't know this) whenever you want to wear any sort of hair piece or clips or even just bobby pins, teasing helps them grip onto something and stay into place! Like the other ladies said bring it with you to your hair trial and ask your stylist. Make sure you move your head around to make sure it is in place! That hair piece is absolutely stunning BTW!
