DJ Props: Yea or Nay?

Jersey, on November 28, 2015 at 3:08 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

I'm home for the holiday weekend and my mom had ordered an Oriental Trading Wedding Catalog. So she's going through it and tells me that I better start thinking about what props I want to have. I had no idea what she was talking about and she said that I had to get props for the DJ to hand out. I've never been to a wedding that had this. So my question is yea or nay on DJ props. Are they fun or tacky? She wants to get glowsticks and sunglasses.

In my head, I said it's an added expense, so nay. But she says they are so necessary that she is going to buy them. So really I just want to know if it's tacky to allow her to have them or if they are fun.

If it makes her feel like she's helping and she wants to pay for them, let her. People might really enjoy them.

We had them. Our DJ came with them though. We also had sambreros and moraccas later in the evening. Everyone really enjoyed the props, so if it's in your budget it's just a nice perk. They're definitely not necessary though.

They're a must in Mexican weddings in Mexico (I'm not being redundant, I just don't know if Mexicans in the US do it). The props usually match the songs. I love them, but everyone at those weddings know what they are and are expecting them.

I'd just get them if your guests will know what they are. I wouldn't have had them in Canada, but if we had got married in Mexico I would have had them for sure.

ETA: I missed the part of what they were - your guests will know for sure what they are, lol. Just get them if you've seen them in other weddings Smiley smile

This is definitely a "To each their own" situation. I abhor props and made it very clear to our DJ NOT to have any. I have been to many weddings where props were used and personally, and not just because I dislike them, see them as an unnecessary expense.

I really think it really depends on your crowd....AND your DJ....AND the atmosphere you're looking for.

That's my concern. I've never seen it in person, so I don't know how I feel about it. I kind of need to see it in action.

Ask your dj! They might know what would be good.

I went to a wedding that had sunglasses and glow sticks and it was a blast. I wasn't going to do props but that changed my mind. If it is in my budget later on I am adding it.

I agree with Celia it depends what vibe your going for. If you're having a super formal event I would say maybe not. I also think I should ask your DJ as he/she has to introduce it. It's very popular in Hispanic culture and most DJs in this area are familiar with if it. It's called the Hora Loca/ Crazy Hour.

I've been to a few weddings where the dj handed out glow sticks they were fun, it didn't take away from the party at all.

Another vote for depends on the feel/formality...They are great for some weddings but I think they might come off out of place at a formal wedding...as a guest I'd rather the money be put into top shelf booze than glow sticks or sunglasses, unless its a cultural must have or something. We will be asking the DJ to not use them.

I think it depends on what kind of vibe you are going for. I wouldn't have wanted them at my wedding at all. If someone had offered I would have made it clear I didn't want them brought. I was going for a laid back whimsical but still somewhat formal feel and I didn't want to have anything like that because to be it seemed cheesy. But if you want a more dance club feeling it might be a good fit. It just depends on if they fit your vision IMO.

Definitely talk to your DJ. Tell him a bit about your crowd, and then he should be able to suggest what to do.

Some DJs provide them and it's personal preference if you want them. I definitely wouldn't purchase them. No one will miss them and your DJ should be providing them if that's his thing

They are fun, for a song or two, then the novelty wears off.

I don't think it will make or break your reception. If you are going for a party vibe, it will be a nice addition. However, if you are having a very formal wedding, it will be out of place and look odd.

I have been to many weddings with props...always was a lot of fun. I say go for it if it fits like others have stated.
