Dj during ceremony?

Brittany, on February 15, 2017 at 4:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Has anyone else had their dj play for their ceremony? The booking agent made it an option for $75 to hire the DJ to also to the ceremony. I originally thought it was a good idea, but now I'm second guessing. Would I just have the music stop during exchange of vows?

My DJ is booked for the ceremony and reception. Included in the package is a cordless microphone for my officiant. You would have the music stop after the processional.

We are debating on live vs dj for or ceremony music. The company we are going to hire has both, but I need to make sure they can perform the songs we want. I've been to several weddings that have had a dj for the ceremony music, and they have been awesome.

We booked our DJ for the ceremony too. Live musicians are nice, but we couldn't justify the cost.

DJ is also doing the ceremony for us. Live music would be nice, but I feel good about our decision. :-)

Your DJ shouldn't be playing music during the entire ceremony lol. Just during the processional and recessional.

Also, you don't need live musicians for the ceremony; it's a personal preference. I would love a violinist, but it doesn't fit into our budget. Save where you can.

Our DJ did our ceremony as well. They don't play during the actual ceremony though. Just processional and recessional.

My DJ did our music for the processional and recessional. I picked out the music and version I wanted and he played exactly what I wanted. It was lovely.

For $75 it's a no-brainer. DJ all the way. Live musicians are cool, but I can't imagine it being worth the expense for a few minutes of music.

I have seen people use their DJ to play the music during their ceremony and also live musicians. They both are fine, but love music always adds a special touch to a ceremony

@FB StPauly said "worth the expense" not "worth the cost". She wasn't devaluing why it cost so much just saying that she doesn't think the expense is worth it. There is a difference IMO.

We paid hundreds for a string quartet at my daughter's ceremony. It was gorgeous, but I think a professional DJ can handle the fade outs when he needs to. There won't be any hard, awkward stops that are jarring, as long as he's an experienced professional. Besides, all he needs to do is play some soft background music as the guests arrive and find their seats, handle the processional, and change the music when the bride walks the aisle -- then fade out. Other than that, it's the recessional. I've been to several weddings with DJs who handled it perfectly.

Oh, I totally agree that a lot more goes into the gig from the musicians' standpoint than just the few minutes that they are playing. I'm not saying that all musicians are overcharging. I'm just saying that there are better things to spend $500-$1500+ on than 10-15 minutes of music when an iPod can do the same thing for virtually free, or in this case the DJ will take care of for $75.

@FB, Elegantly fade out? I mean, even if it doesn't, I don't think it will ruin the ceremony.

Our DJ is playing our music via iPod for the ceremony, seems reasonable enough and live musicians definitely were not in the budget lol

I am psycho about fade outs, and yes, it's horrifying when they just stop one song and start enough. It's not brain surgery; they just have to pay attention. And people do notice; it's a sign of an amateur dj.

Live musicians are lovely, but they don't solve the 'officiant needs sound' issue. And usually they don't just play a 'few minutes of music" ; they play cocktail hour too.

75.00 is very cheap for that; if you don't do that, what are you going to do? Hum?

    Do it.

Brittany, you made the right decision. You'll want your DJ to play music as your guests are arriving and taking their seats. Then you'll need music for your processional, bride's entrance, and recessional. There typically isn't music played during the actual ceremony so don't worry about your vows or any other speaking parts of your ceremony. Best wishes.

My DJ is playing for the walk down the aisle and walk back up. Not during the vows or anything.

We booked the DJ for our ceremony and reception. He will also be playing music during cocktail hour.
