DJ and officiant?

FutureMrsSmith, on January 19, 2015 at 5:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Soooooo, my photographer who I have already booked, referred us to a DJ who he says that we will absolutely love. We've only been e-mailing with this potential DJ and she mentioned that she is also an officiant and can do both at the same time. She is a vendor on WW and all her reviews are great. We also need an officiant, so I figure why not? Anybody else having or had other vendors pull double duty? Did it turn out alright? Any reservations about it?

I have seen both sides of the scenario...a few times it went fine. There is one time in particular which it not go well. My concern would be set up time. In most cases, dj's are setting up just prior to the ceremony, and most of the time during the ceremony. I would recommend she has more than enough time to set up for the reception prior to the ceremony. If something were to go wrong with set up, I would hate to see her mind not in the right place when it is supposed to be. But again, I have seen both sides. I wish you the best!

Have you ever heard the saying Jack of all trades, master of none?

Will she be playing music for the ceremony (prelude, processional, recessional)? Does she have a remote control for her sound system, so she can control it from up front?

Providing you have different ceremony music/musicians, and you like her, I would say go for it. I'm too paranoid that the wrong song will play at the wrong time for my walk, and I want to make sure I have the DJ in place behind the music.

Call me crazy, but I think you do one thing and you do it well. The timeframe, as Holly mentioned, is pretty much the same; someone has to set up, be in charge of organizing your processional, playing the music for it, and then orchestrating the recessional. Beyond that, what makes her qualified to officiate? I could understand that someone who has an "emcee" personality could officiate, but that doesn't mean they can put a ceremony together. Many of my DJ's and maitre'd's are legal to do weddings, but they don't do them; they got ordained so in an emergency the couple isn't screwed.

I'd ask to see a ceremony she's written, interview her the way you would any other officiant, and then I'd want to know how she's going to pull this off without it looking bogus. I don't even offer to turn on an iPod.

I will have to ask her many, many questions when we meet with her. I would hope maybe she will have an assistant for the ceremony because we will only be having songs that she will be playing (no musicians or anything like that). I might be a little worried about it if she didn't have such great reviews, but they are all 5 stars and even some of them say she did both jobs and it went great.

@Celia--I would definitely be worried about the timeline, but she said she is ordained in PA (the state we are getting married in) and she said she has been doing ceremonies for over two years. Which leads me to believe she has done double duty at least a few times. I will be grilling her for sure when we sit down with her!

My officiant is also my DOC...however, she also has an assistant who will be there as well and take over during the ceremony. My DJ will be doing the music for the ceremony so he could not officiate!

Personally, I'd like my dentist to just be my dentist, if you know what I mean.

Haha @Celia, definitely know what you mean. I'll probably be stressed about it the closer it gets if we do book her for both, so it might be worth it to just get two different people!

I'm with Celia on this one. There might be professionals skilled enough to pull it off, but I've always been a strong believer of the saying "jack of all trades, master of none."

Yeah, if she's officiating, who is playing the ceremony music?

Its one thing if there is a staff, quite another if she's solo. For instance,I''m a DJ, and we also offer videography, BUT that involves more people ,not just me. When we were hired for both, its 3 people showing up.

Make sure any 'assistant' is good enough on their own. The last thong you need is for there to be an issue and your officiant has to switch to DJ to handle it because the assistant is just a button pusher and doesn't know w anything works.
