diy wedding sound system

katt, on January 29, 2018 at 10:12 AM Posted in Planning 0 14
We're trying to save money by not getting a DJ for our outdoor wedding. Was wanting to do a speaker sound system ran off a laptop or phone. Ideas?? Suggestions??

DJ's do more than play music. Are you going to ask someone to run the show? DJ's make all of the announcements, keep the party going, they announce cake and garter and first dances and the whole thing. Making a playlist is simple and fine but if you are having a traditional reception with all of the bells and whistles I'd reconsider.

Just shop around-- look under the vendor tabs or see if your venue can refer anyone.

I know it's a UO here and it's fully personal whether you do this or not, but i've seen it work successfully at several weddings, including ours. we spent a long time curating our playlists for cocktails and dancing, sorted it and put it on Spotify and did a thing that eliminated the silence between songs, uploaded it to a couple of devices for safety, hooked it into our venue's sound system, gave the password to a couple of trusted friends, and all was good. people loved our playlist and the dance floor was packed all night. our MC turned the music off and on for speeches/toasts. (not sure if having an MC is a regional thing but it's common where i am to have a friend/relative do your announcements and transitions) i know it's not for everyone, but it can work. our wedding was big but not super formal, so a more DIY approach suited our vibe.

i can't speak to doing your own sound system because that's not something i know much about--part of why we felt comfortable doing this was that we knew we basically just had to plug in and everything else would work (our venue came with an AV tech to help us get it set up and keep it going). for that i'd make sure you have some tech support.

Sounds like a bad idea- lots can go wrong when someone isn't dedicated to making sure nothing goes wrong with the music, and DJs are trained to handle those kinds of issues to keep your day running smoothly!

We actually spent the most on our DJ outside of our venue to make sure we have an awesome experience, and so do our guests.

We are getting a DIY sound system, but a friend will be manning it, as he's done it for a few weddings before.

I wouldn't suggest just plugging and playing, someone has to be there to take requests, make sure it stops for speeches, and change the music if the mood changes. But I don't think you necessarily have to find a fancy DJ, you just need someone who knows audio equipment and knows how to read a crowd.

A mixing console, two large speakers with stands and cables, and wireless mics. Thinking about maybe adding a clip on mic for my fiance because I can just see him dropping the mic during the ceremony, haha.

We are renting these items in a package from a local DJ/sound company and they recommended all these items to us. It also comes with dance floor lights, not sure if I'll end up using those or not. The total price is $145

As a professional wedding musician, I can tell you that you have no idea how much work it is to provide music for a wedding. Please reconsider hiring a professional DJ.

The people that posted here may be long gone now. Are you doing dance music? What type of venue do you have? Especially, is it indoors our outside? You can check with a music equipment store to get a suitable system. There are some that will work off the bluetooth of a phone. I would think the lowest output power would be 400Watts.
