diy tip jar!

Stephanie, on June 17, 2019 at 1:24 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 53
So the venue mentioned to me that they do have a tip jar, nothing fancy, for the bar if guests wish to leave a "thank you" for the bar tender. We are covering the costs for our consumption bar, But they said we can also bring our own if there's something specific we wanted or something to match our decor.

This doesn't have to do with our decorations lol but I felt crafty and decided to make them a jar to keep for future functions after mine and as a thank you.

The jar is from Target $2.99, the glitter tulle was a banner (string from the banner is tied around the bottom) which I thought cost $1 which is why I grabbed it since it was in that section at Target and didn't realize til after it was $3! Lol but I don't regret getting it after seeing the outcome. I used hot glue to stick them on and my HP Sprocket Printer to create the sign on it.

Are you not planning on tipping your staff?

It's not your guests' responsibility to cover your staff's tip, it's your responsibility. If people want to tip they will, but the jar being out kinda makes it seems like it's on the guest to make sure the bartender gets paid. Always strikes me as tacky whenever I see one (which is rare).

The DIY part is good though, You're definitely handy Smiley smile

Never said I wasn't going to tip them lol I said we are covering the costs in my post, ALL costs. I only did it because the venue manager mentioned it.

I think it's super cute! I've seen tip jars for bartenders at plenty of weddings. Actually, most of them have one. I don't see anything wrong with it. They usually have quite a bit of money in them at the end of a night, so other guests must not see anything wrong with it either. Good job on the DIY!

My wedding planner mentioned to me, that we should do a tip jar for the bartender too. I didn’t think of it before, but I like the idea and will likely implement one as well. I love your tip jar. Super cute!!!

I was never leaving it up to the guests and my posted stated we are covering the cost. The venue manager mentioned they have a tip jar they put out or if we wanted to provide one for them so I just saw the materials and did it but never with the intention of not paying.

I wouldn't think it's tacky because I've seen it at weddings more expensive than mine and I know my crowd they aren't judgemental in that sense if anything they feel it's pretty common because we've had discussions like these before but to each their own. We have covered and plan to cover all remaining costs

Its cute but I agree that it’s a bit tacky. I personally wouldn’t put it out. You’re going to tip them anyway so no need.

It’s cute!! My venue has one already,
so I will just use that one. Every wedding I have attended has had a tip jar at the bar,
perhaps it’s a regional thing? We are tipping our bartender ourselves as well, we pay the bartender directly and not through the venue or caterer

Thank you!! Maybe it is a regional thing, good point!! Our service fees and percentages were included with the venue since it's an all inclusive with the bill type of thing but I know we'd get questions about "where's the tip jar" I know FHs family and they're big on tipping so I know they'd ask for sure they're not forced to use it especially if we're hosting it I don't expect them to, I thought it was cute and pretty normal lol

I would just tell the manager you do not want a tip jar. If you're covering the costs/tips, there's no point in having one.

Agree with this. I don't get the point if you're already tipping. If people want to tip, they give the bartender a tip. They don't need to be told to (which is what a jar is) if you're covering it.

The manager was in the wrong here.

I think it is adorable. Great job. We are having a tip jar. Our bar tenders are paid via our caterer but we are also doing the tip jar.

Well I think it's nice of you to make something for them.
    Goodness.
I'd never go to a wedding and have a meltdown because of a tip jar.

Yeah don't think they'll have a meltdown but I know for sure it'll be a question more than once through the night lol

I would say about half the weddings I’ve been to have had tip jars (Texas/the South) and half have not. I’ve never thought to be offended by it. In fact, I like tipping $20 and continue going to the same bartender at weddings because then they’ll give you a heavier pour lol
