diy Ring Cleaning

Kim, on March 20, 2018 at 3:09 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 29

Stopped off at Shane Co last week to get my standard 6 mo ring cleaning. I was talking to an employee about wedding bands and I asked how often they clean the rings in the display case - he said EVERY night. Every night they take them out, soak them for 15-30 minutes in a "mixture" and then steam them. I asked him what they use for cleaning and he said it's pretty much just 3 parts warm water and 1 part windex! He said you can do it at home, let it soak, then give it a light scrub with a soft bristle toothbrush and BAM sparkly ring! He also said you can even go the next step and put the ring in your dishwasher on the steam setting. HAHA Since I have a white sapphire, it can get dirty pretty quickly, so I tried the soak part yesterday and it definitely left the ring more sparkly that any other solution/soap I had tried. Wanted to post in case it helps anyone else!

I do the same - instead of Windex, a tiny bit of dish soap.

Nice! My FH bought an at home cleaning kit when he bought my ring so I can clean mine whenever I want to. I love the freedom to do so! I always clean it before we go to any sort of gathering in case people want to see it

That's what I had been using and he told me for diamonds that should be fine, but with a white sapphire that shows all, dawn once dried actually leaves a slight film on the stone - which I can totally attest to! It sparkled much more with windex than dawn dish soap for me.

I have this ultrasonic cleaner thing I got on amazon, put a little dot of dish soap in it with the water and it looks brand new. Cleans my glasses too.

I would say keep in mind that they clean the rings every night because they're trying to sell them. And many many people have tried them on in a day, or they've sat & gotten dusty.

I don't think you need to clean your ring every single night.

Of course I'm totally going home tonight and trying the windex thing!

Jeweler once told me to use a few tablespoons of warm water, one drop of Dawn dishwashing soap, and a couple sprays of Windex, mixed together in a small container. Drop the rings in and let them soak for a couple minutes, then do a quick brushing with a child's soft toothbrush. Rinse under warm running water, and dry with a soft lint-free cloth.

This is awesome. My FH was just saying the other day he wanted to get my ring cleaned. Now I know we can do it at home.

Instead of windex, I use pine sol. Makes it sooooo shiny, but I only do it once a week.

Do you know if you have a natural or lab created stone?

if your sapphire is fracture filled or enhanced steaming it in your dishwasher can shatter your stone...

Mine’s a natural, untreated sapphire but good to know! Thanks! Not worth the risk! Plus the soak has been good enough.

I used to work for a jeweler. We used any ultra sonic with water, a drop of dawn dish soap, and a cap of ammonia. I also have white sapphires in my ring and need to start doing this because they get looking dingy vey quickly.

I heard water, rubbing alcohol with a toothbrush so far the past 6 months it’s been working for me but I may have to try the dawn as well.

Thank you for the great tip. I have white sapphires in my engagement ring and noticed they dull quickly.
