DIY Makeup Regrets?

materantiqua, on April 11, 2016 at 1:43 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 26

Hi all,

I have a couple makeup trials coming up and already had one really bad flop (the guy was awesome but wanted to charge $300 for day of makeup!!!). I'm a makeup enthusiast and really do love doing my own makeup and perfecting my techniques, but I would really prefer not to do my own makeup day of. Part of me wants to start planning just in case I don't find someone...

So, the point of this post is...if you DIYed your own makeup, do you have any regrets? Would you have preferred to hire someone? Also, what did you do to prepare?

Sorry if it seems desperate to bump this. I think it got lost in the sea of double rings.

Honestly I was going to do my own makeup for the big day, however the person doing my hair is also a MUA and I am going to have a trial with her in June. I only want her to do my airbrushing and eye shadow, possibly bronzer, blush but I don't want a ton of crap on my face. I'm amazing at doing my own eyelashes and all that so I just want some things done...maybe depending on how the trial turns out. Honestly if you do your own make sure you use primer and finishing spray.

Following. I'm going to be forced to DIY due to being stuck on a cruise ship right until time to hop off and get married.

I cannot speak personally, but I do know the one thing that seems to come up when people do their own makeup is the staying power. Makeup done by pros will still look great after wind, tears, and hours of wear. I do know people who have successfully DIYed though.

I won't be able to help much, because I'm not married yet. But I'll say this - go with something you're comfortable with. I had 2 makeup trials with two different people. I'm comfortable with my look how I do my makeup, but I don't wear makeup terribly often, so I'm not consistent with it and if I'm nervous, my eyeliner ends up everywhere. Haha. If you're confident in your abilities, I say go for it! Just make it a bit more bold than normal.

For me though, splurging on a good MAU is going to be totally worth it. She's about 3x as much as the others I went to, but my fiancé and I are happily paying her because she's amazing and I feel great!

I'll stress it again - go with what you're comfortable with. Smiley smile Top photo is of one of my trials I hated (everyone kept trying to talk me into loving it) and bottom photos are of my amazing MAU I'll be using.

@Kmess That is one of my biggest concerns. Try as I might, I can't get my makeup to stay all day. To be honest, I haven't tried setting spray yet, but setting powder alone doesn't do it for my oily skin Smiley sad

One of the reasons I am freaking out is that most people whose work I love and that I've tried to contact seem super flaky. One of them I contacted on FB because the website she put on there is down, and even when she asks me a question and knows I usually respond within a day, she doesn't get back to me until two days or more later. I'm hoping she makes up for it in the trial. I'm just in a frustrated F*** it, maybe I should try to DIY it sort of mood about this now.

Do you have pictures from your pro trial to compare with a picture from when you do your own makeup? Personally when I do my own makeup it is barely noticeable. Over all when I do my makeup I look better bc there are less noticeable blemishes and more dimension with a little bronzer, blush, eye shadow and mascara. But when I had my makeup done professionally, not only did it look good longer, but in pictures my face was flawless. No matter want pose or smile (or not) I had very few complaints about the way my face looked in any picture. I could have RBF (which in many pictures I do) but they still look great.

So, this isnt a DIY makeup regret, but its the regret I always hear my brides come back to me with and a big one I want to share.

With my bridals trials, I'll suggest a lipcolor that I know will photograph beautifully and give the look they want - and a lot will very often counter with 'thats too dark' or 'i want something nude'.

I explain why I chose the color I did, how photography will wash out the color and that in photos, this will look exactly how they want it to. Some trust my expertise and experience - others refuse and are -dead set- on the very light nude colors.

9 times out of 10, the ones who insist we go with the lighter color will tell me later -- "i should have listened to you, you were right, it looked like i wasnt even wearing anything in the photos".

Choose a lipcolor a couple shades darker than the one you think you want. You will be much happier with the end result.

One exception to this rule is women with very dark skintones - for them, lighter nudes can really pop, same with brighter colors, whereas darker lipcolors tend to get lost.

Just a little fyi for all! If you choose to DIY, dont do it to save money because you probably wont when all is said and done and you've purchased the right primer and setting spray, foundation, etc.

@Niki Thanks for that tip. Sounds like something I'd do because I don't really wear a lot of lip color. The most I do in a given day is NYX Intense Butter Gloss.

I am also planning on doing my makeup; as I struggled with flaky people as well and was tired of it. I see you mentioned you have oily skin; as do I. I went to Sephora and told the sales person I have super oily skin; and he was able to recommend a few foundations to test out. I got samples of 4 and was able to see how they reacted with my skin. I would put on a primer, foundation and setting powder and put them to the test; I would literally go for a jog in full face of makeup and saw how they held up.

Another thing I am doing is watching youtube videos of bridal makeup (Jaclyn Hill's video is great, she goes into every little detail so it's a bit long). I have tested my makeup with flash photography to see what I need to add as photography tends to wash you out.

In my opinion the most important part of your makeup is the eye shadow so I would test that out as much as possible; so you can get comfortable with doing it and feel less pressure on the day of.

Also give yourself enough time; once you figure out your eye look and what products you want to use; do a full face trial and time yourself. After you are complete I say add 30 min to that for the day of in case you need it.

ETA: Just saw the pics you posted; I would go with a bit more of a contour and blush. Also maybe add some color to the lips; I saw that you don't usually wear much; but a pretty nude can make a world of a difference

I'm planning on doing my own, so I'm very interested to see if anyone regrets it. We're getting married in the middle of nowhere, so I figured it would cost too much to have some one come out to do my hair and makeup. I did my hair and makeup for my engagement pictures, and I like how it turned out.

I'm very proficient with my make up. I'm still paying someone to do it for me day of. For a lot for reasons. And it's worth every penny. And the flat charge to do hair and make up is 300. On top of that is travel and gratuity.

I still think it's worth it.

The idea of not being stressed to do hair and or make up is worth the money.

I did my own makeup..my MUA cancelled the week before the wedding for a better offer. I'm happy with how it turned out, and try not to feel regret hehe (since there's nothing I could really change). But I'd have liked the experience of relaxing and having someone else do my makeup on my wedding day. One less thing to worry about. I think doing trials beforehand is a must for DIY and making sure you have all the right makeup. I picked up what I could week of (setting spray, foundation, couple other things), but besides that used my everyday makeup.

I'm doing my own makeup. As others said its not for a cost saving reason. I rarely wear makeup, so I do want a more natural look. I haven't had the best of luck when getting my makeup done professionally before, so I'd rather do my own.

I went to sephora and had them do a custom makeover for me. I then bought what they recommended including a setting spray. I'm currently working on getting my look right. For me it was more about comfortability as I probably spent a lot more on makeup than I would've a MUA.

I hope you wrote her a review stating she flaked for a "better offer". That is horrible.

I did my own and I don't have any regrets per se, but I probably should have reapplied at some point. As other ladies have said I wear very little makeup on a regular basis. Makeup wasn't that important to me though and it sounds like it is more important to you.
