DIY Invitations from Michaels?

Ang, on August 3, 2015 at 10:41 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 31

I just started looking into wedding invitations and I am shocked at how much they cost! I am new to wedding planning so I was naïve to think "oh wedding invitations are around $1.00/ $1.50 each so it will cost me about $100-$150..." I have no idea that you then had to buy reception cards, rsvp cards, etc. Silly me I thought it was a packaged deal for $1.00!

I am inviting about 200 people to my wedding so I am going to need around 100 invitations. I found an invite that I LOVED but after adding everything together it was about $700.00! That is not in my budget!

I went to Michaels and they have really cute wedding packages for 39.99 and of course I would the 40% off coupon so it would be very affordable! About $100 for 100 invites. My question is has anyone used these before? Or printed your own?

I got my invitations from Walmart but Michaels' has boxed invitations that are similar. The ones I got are by Gartner Studios. http://www.gartnerstudios.com/shop/script-love-invitation.html

I spent $40 for 100 invitations. I did not want to invest a lot of time and money in invitations because people just want to know when and where the wedding is and then they trash the invite. We chose the font and wording and then my mom printed them up on her Canon printer. She said it was easy. The invitations came with RSVP cards and she printed those, too.

I bought the invitation kits from Michaels, printed them myself and then customized them so they fit my style. I saved a ton of money this way rather than buying them, but they were a lot of work and time consuming.

Another perspective.....invitations mean different things to everyone. I'm the opposite. The invitation is the first thing that people will see with your wedding, so I really put thought into it....probably too much I admit, but I wanted it to be a sneak peak of what's to come.

I had a budget but my guest list was 80, my invites 40, so I was able to spend a little more and they were DIY which saved a lot.

    Rosemary those look fantastic!!

I can't justify spending so much money on invitations! I am not really doing any DIY things for my wedding so I can spend as much time as I need playing around with them!

Ang, we got our STDs and Invitations from Vistaprint while using a 50% coupon code. Spent about $120 for STD magnets, invitations, reply cards, envelops, and Address stickers. Shipping really sucks though. Its like 19.99!!!

My MOH printed invites to my shower. Card stock is fairly cheap (She got nice metallic pearl stock for $9.99 a pack!) and there are free printable templates on pintrest and wedding blogs sites (Budget Savvy Bride is the one she used). I wish I had known about the printables sooner, could have saved even more money.

Yes, here are my Michael's invites. I made the belly band myself. Spent about $45 on 80 invites and got matching thank you cards for another $45.

I have the same kit that @Rosemary used. I got mine from a seller on eBay who had them for $12.99 a pack (25 in a pack) so just a hair over 50 cents each. I had the graphic designer at work take a look and she was very impressed with the quality (and I had t send her the fonts I used because she loved them together).

I had to print on my old Inkjet printer though. My new laser would not cooperate with the card stock. I could do 20 of the main invites before the rollers overheated and it jammed. Then when I got to the inserts the rollers wouldn't even pick up the cards. But printing on the inkjet was a breeze.

Oh! And since I JUST mailed them this morning...93 cents to mail. I ended up using two forever stamps because the only 93 cent stamp is Flannery O'Connor and custom ones were like $1.50 each.

JCC, I LOVE THOSE!! My theme is "classic romance" and my colors are blush pink, ivory, and gold! I looked at those in the store! If I recall correctly they didn't come with reception cards? Did you add one or did you not have one? Are the completely necessary?

I got mine from hobby lobby! they have 50% all the time on their wedding stuff. I'm also sort of new to wedding planning but I think what I'm gonna do should work! The invite "pack" comes with a blank invite, a pretty envelope with printed liner, blank smaller card "for rsvp" and the rsvp envelope. I think I got 25 for 10 bucks! Instead of using the blank invite, I'm gonna use that for programs to tie the invite into my wedding. and then I'm going to just get some sort of other paper to print my actual invite on. The envelope, invite and rsvp card have all the same pattern, so this is my way of breaking it up and making it more "boho" and not matchy matchy. But hobby lobby has a lot of super cute invite options! Just wait until those 50% weeks or if you cant wait, use the 40% coupon you get on the hobby lobby app!

@Ang yes they did come with an rsvp card. I added an additional card with my wedding website info, which was really easy to make and I had the fonts just match the invite.

I'm also looking for a less expensive idea for my wedding invites.

Our theme is Under the Sea so I've been trying to find ones for that, but with no luck

Office Depot also carries wedding invitation kits. Noticed that when I was shopping in there the other day.

We got my FH's sister's invites from Walmart. They were $20 for a pack of 25. She ordered templates off of Etsy and we printed them ourselves. They did come with response cards and envelopes, but we made additional cards for accomodations out of plain ivory cardstock. It's definitely the less expensive way to go if you find a style you like!

Edit because they were packs of 25, not packs of 100.

I actually just bought sheets of 12x12 paper from michaels. It was 5 for $1 and made all my own custom invitations. It took awhile to figure out placement, fonts and everything but they turned out amazing! I also lined my envelopes with a fancier cardboard color/gold stripped paper to spice it up a bit. I loved the way they turned out and i just wrapped a doilie around them and tied a bow with twine!

I ordered my invites and rsvp cards through this etsy shop DawnMarieCreations82. It cost $139 for 70 invites, rsvp cards and envelopes for both. She sells sets of 100 for $177

Oh! If you have a Pat Catan's near you (the BEST craft store--prices are so good there's no need for coupons like Michael's and Hobby Lobby) check there in the coming months for them to start clearancing wedding stock. Before I landed on the black and white above I bought sets of 50 for $8.97. They were from Gartner Studios...cardstock with a vellum overlay that the invitation was printed on and tied together with ribbon. Also came with RSVP insert. They were very nice but I found the black and white and loved those. I ended up handing these ones off to FSIL who's getting married next year and she was ecstatic.

I think it was around August/September of last year that I found them and snagged three boxes so 150 invitations for under $30.

Honestly I believe that as long as your happy with your decision and it does not break your bank, go for it. If you prefer those invites and they fit within your budget and are not crazy expensive but still beautiful 'abso-freakin-lutely' get them. This is your day not any other person's. As much as I love my family, I will always ask myself am I doing it for them or me? Will this make me happy?

Otherwise, will they help you pay for your wedding day? Are they going to help you out of your budget crisis if it came to it? Not to be mean honestly. Just things to ask yourself

I used one of their invite kits to make bridal shower invitations. They were really easy to make and saved a lot of money!
