Has anyone made their own wedding broom to jump?

Jennifer, on May 26, 2017 at 2:58 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 21

Has anyone made their own broom to jump the broom? I want to make something pretty but also easy, I'm not a huge DIY person.

I would love to see pics and ideas of what people outside of pinterest (AKA easier thatn what is on Pinterest) are doing!

Forgive me if I don't know what I'm talking about, I've only heard of this tradition recently.

You can get a fairly cheap broom for $5 or so and spray paint it with glitter paint. I don't think you can do too much for decoration since it'll be on the ground anyway.

Another idea is to get some straw, a roundish stick (or buy one from the store or have one made, up to you), and some twine. You could hot glue the straw on and tie it at the base with the twine.

I've seen what pp is mentioning and that could be cool. We are getting one from Amazon and wrapping the stick in ribbon and will probably add these gold pins to match my bouquet handle.

I'd get a straw broom (like this one) and wrap the handle in ribbon. Maybe add some fake baby's breath around the base?

Wow I see a lot of people haven't heard of this but I am also jumping the broom which represents sweeping out the past lives and starting this journey fresh. Also the broom I have is beautiful and very decorative because it only goes on the ground for a few minutes and then it will be hanging on our wall in our room as a reminder of the vows. Slaves were not allowed to marry so this is where jumping the broom comes in. You can buy the broom on amazon or at Michaels and decorate it. You are supposed to have the married women of your family and friends bless the broom. So it is a big deal if this is tradition and it is for my FH family and mine. These were my inspiration photos to have my mother make our broom. Good Luck.

@The Royal Blues thank you! This is exactly why FH wants to do it. I did not know about having the ladies bless it, so I appreciate that information. We are planning on hanging it in our home afterwards as well Smiley smile

@Jennifer YAY come back and post the beautiful broom. I am sure it will be AMAZING!!!! We are doing a reading of why we are jumping the broom right before so everyone at our wedding understands. The blessings are a old tradition I guess. I am not sure why either but my great grandmother who is Japanese married my African American great-grandfather and they jumped the broom so it began in our family. I am not a DIY person but have been surprising myself with this wedding. There are also videos on youtube. Best of luck girl.

Thanks, I most certainly will! I was goign to try to tackle the broom this weekend but now I'm working all weekend (picked up hours at my second job) so I guess I'll try to order something now and decorate it later. If you find a nice looking broom to order please share it with me!

Along with Elphaba's suggestion, maybe also look on Etsy? I would think Pinterest would probably have some ideas as well! Also, thanks Elphaba for the explanation and your broom is gorgeous! I love the peacock feathers on it as well.

I did ours. I actually got the broom itself from our grocery store.

For a family member I purchased a small one from Michael's and added small red roses to it using a glue gun. I wrapped the handle with white ribbon and tied a bow at the nape of the broom. It was cute and it took all of an hour to complete. I don't have pics but everyone thought I had purchased it as a final package.

My best friend's mom wrapped hers in ribbon that matched the wedding colors and then put a line of rhinestones all down the handle. It was really pretty!

Publix Supermarkets and Cracker Barrel Restaurants sell a cinnamon broom that is made in Georgia. Not expensive, smells great, and you can decorate it with your wedding colors!

I think you could easily DIY this with ribbon and florals!
