Divorced parents' photo?

Laura, on December 26, 2008 at 10:01 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

I'm having guests' wedding photos with names & dates displayed around the venue at our reception. It's already been so fun seeing everyone's wedding & making their memories a part of our day for everyone to look at and share. My parents have been divorced for 30 years. Both are remarried and they have no anger or animosity towards each other. My mom thinks I should display my parents' wedding pic because people would like to see the parents of the bride like that. I am afraid it's weird since they're divorced but it is a really beautiful pic. I thought about just displaying my mom as a bride to show how I look like her but afraid that would slight my father to cut him out of it. I barely speak to my dad (once in 5 years to tell him I'm getting married) so I don't feel comfortable calling to ask him how he feels about it but I also don't want to offend him or his wife. How would u view it if u saw this at a wedding? Would u think it inappropriate? Or interesting?Am I just over-thinking?

Thats a very touchy subject but I think it would be okay. They divorced many years ago and since they are civil toward one another I'm sure it will be fine. Have you considered having their remarried pictures displayed as well?

Yes of course. I asked EVERY married couple in their save-the-dates to please share a wedding photo with me so I could make a copy and display it. My mother gave me one from her new wedding, which is only a couple years old. I haven't gotten an answer from my father about it, they've been married 25 years. There are no bad feelings between us, we simply don't have a relationship. It has been forever since the divorce which is why I think it might be ok, but I don't know if people will see it and think it's weird to display a wedding that ended. But it's kinda cool to show the bride's parents especially since I look like my mom did on her wedding day. I also have no idea how my dad's wife would feel about it, I haven't seen her in years but she was so sweet to me when I was little I'd hate to offend her. But I'm not close enough to talk about with her either.

Laura, I wish you the best of luck getting pictures of your parents to display at your Wedding. Honestly coming from a family with divorced parents as well,it is a touchy subject. Like you, I don't have much of a relationship with my dad either. Maybe you could display one of both of them at their wedding, one of your mom as a bride, and one of both of your parents with their current spouses. That way you won't offend anyone.

Laura,Although it is a touchy subject like the last post said I think it would be fine if you get a photo from each of your parents current weddings& display your parents & your FH parents picture in the same spot. Then it is simply the 4 parents of the bride & groom. Then you can display their other wedding pictures with all of the other guests wedding pictures. Their old wedding picture will mean nothing more than these are the parents of the bride, if they having been divorced FOREVER & are remarried & totally civil to each other I really don't think it will be a problem. You may be over thinking just a tad but I would call your dad & or his current wife & say I really need a picture of you two at your wedding & explain why, even if you don't have a relationship with the man just explain it anyway as a courtesy or explain it to his wife & make sure you tell them you don't want to slight her so you really need the pic, because you are displaying everyone that's married at the recept.

Those are some really good ideas. I like the idea of each of their original individual pics with their current ones. The only thing is that I don't know if my dad and his wife even had any kind of wedding and therefore if they would have a photo, it was both their second time. I was 5 when they got married, I don't remember if they had one but know I wasn't there if they did. They haven't sent a photo yet, but a lot of people haven't. I'm thinking that if I want to display the photo I'll have to just bite the bullet and make a courtesy call, but I'll probably write a cowardly email instead! He's just a stranger to me and it's awkward every time I call him. He's invited to the wedding but has no other part in it. I think I'm more concerned if it will make his wife uncomfortable. But it has been 30 years for goodness sake! But as a guest you guys wouldn't see it and wonder why I'm showing a wedding that ended in divorce?

If I was a guest I would just think how how nice look Laura's parents wedding picture. I think you might be really over thinking this one since they've been divorced over 30 years! After all they were once married, & had you! Nothing more....they ARE your mother & father & they WERE once married.

Laura, If your father doesn't respond, I would say to display your mother's original bridal portrait. This way you wouldn't offend their new spouses, but you can still include a piece of your "history." He really doesn't have a right to feel "slighted", you tried to get his opinion...you can only do some much honey Smiley smile
