Disposable Plates?

bitbit, on April 18, 2017 at 12:15 PM

Is anyone using disposable plates and silverware? My caterer had a few options and I was surprised how nice they looked. I did a quick search online and saw some other nice ones. Just curious as to what everyone else is working with?

@LB I'll make sure to tag you in my BAM so you can relish in the discontentment of my guests as they eat off of their disposable plates.

Is your only option disposable plates?? Does your caterer offer real plates? Are the extra or something?

Along with formality, the type of food you're serving also dictates whether or not disposable is okay.

Steak and plastic knives don't work. What kind of food are you serving?

I am using disposable plates but I'm also getting married in a rustic open-aired lodge. If I was going to a formal wedding I would expect the plates to match the formality of the rest of the decorations/venue.

Ohh, what about you save the $10k on the flowers and just keep with the disposable plate theme?

Can you upgrade to real silverware?

I am fine with those fake china looking plates. They look real and are sturdy.

But ill be damned it i have to cut my meat with a plastic knife.

@MMB we are doing pulled pork, brisket, roasted portobello, fried fish, mashed potato bar, jalapeno mac and cheese, black beans and rice, and green beans. It's at a state park, not some super fancy venue.

Why do I feel like a bunch of kids are going to start chanting "fight fight fight" soon?

Anyway, I would like to know, from pure curiosity, what the price difference is for reusable plates vs. disposable? I would think one would only use disposable on the beach or like one PP said, in a barn doing BBQ, but I'm not planning a wedding with a caterer so I really don't know. Do they charge you for using their china?

I'm having a really hard time picturing this. You're installing floral chandeliers? I'm assuming this is outdoors. Can you even serve alcohol?

$10k of flowers for a wedding at a state park. Jeez. Is your dress made out of flowers?

@Jessi uhhhhh wait WUT? How are you feeding your guests? Are you having a cake and punch reception? That's the only situation where no caterer is an option.

@Sarah, I have not looked into reusable plates yet. I don't think the caterer supplies them so I have to look into renting.

Bitbit, I think the point people are trying to get across is that your wedding is mismatched. No one spends 10K on flowers for an informal, casual wedding. It just doesn't make sense. That would be like me wearing a big fancy, 10K silk ballgown to a barn wedding or having a wedding at the Ritz with the groom in khakis. Nice disposable plates is fine for a park wedding (though it still wouldn't be my choice), but disposable plates with 10K on florals just looks like you couldn't decide what you wanted your wedding to be.

Hmmm if you can afford 10k in flowers your can afford real plates. We have paper plates when my family has a birthday party, when I'm at a wedding I think tacky.

Honestly I wouldn't be happy cutting brisket with a plastic knife. And I completely agree with the irony of having it at a state park but then putting waste into landfills. Also, all those flowers will go to waste too.

It is just the juxtaposition of the two. 10k flowers and paper plates clash.

100% no on this, IMHO, unless your wedding is uber casual. And 100% no if you are spending 10k on flowers.

I am planning to do plastic plates but still get real silverware. Nothing expensive or fancy looking, but I am not a fan of plastic silverware for dinner and if it breaks etc. plates however, as long as they hold up I'm not worried about that.
