Disposable plates, utensils and cups

Katie, on February 4, 2019 at 9:58 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 23
We are having a wedding in the mountains and are really contemplating disposable everything for four and drinks. No one wants to do the dishes and we really dont want to spend $500+ to rent. We are having bbq as our food. Thoughts on disposable? We are having 140-160 people at our wedding.

One of the hardest foods to eat without getting clothes messy, is barbecue, and I would not think of disposable dishes or utensils. Cut things there is no real need for, little proposal gift, any getting ready or party stuff you do, signs, many decorations or projects. You can us prerecorded music, you do not need a photographer more than 1½ hours for anything before start if wedding. Everyone can get ready where they live ir stay, you need not pay for others Grooming. But do not cut on sturdy, large permanent dishes and flatware. Barbecue easily soaks grease through, and stains. Cutlery for meat will cut through plastic plates, so holes in bottom leak. You do not need fine china. But sturdy, with oversize plates to avoid slopping over edges, so peoples clothes do not get destroyed, is a must.

What type of BBQ will you be serving? Is it pulled pork, Mac n cheese and baked beans? If so then I think disposable is fine. Look into posh party supplies online and webstaurant.com. You will get better deals for thr number of people you are serving. I purchased disposables from both sites. The attached pictures are from webstaurany.com. Hope this helps.

I’m dealing with the same situation. We actually have real dishes available with our venue included. But who wants to wash dishes for 180 people???
were having burgers and a baked potato bar, so messy as well. I’m looking at the palm leaf plates, they are classy and compostable and supposed to hold up well. Plan to order some to try. If not I’m probably going to buckle down and pay someone to wash dishes because I can’t stand the idea of all those expensive plastic plates in the landfill along with the cups were already doing. But I don’t want people to have their plates buckling or leaking either.

Personally, I think with BBQ it’s totally acceptable to use paper. (Maybe just choose the sturdiest stuff you can find.) BBQs have a fun picnic vibe, and I’d never use my regular dishes at a picnic!

I’m planning on using bamboo plates/utensils. It’s still on the expensive side, but cheaper than china. It looks very nice, is sturdy, and is an environment friendly option.

We had bbq at our wedding and our caterer provided us with disposable utensils/plates. No one had any issues with the plates not being sturdy enough/sauces or grease/cooking oils etc. soaking through. The plastic cutlery held up pretty good too.

Shouldn't the venue or caterer be doing the dishes? Especially if it comes with the venue

Nothing comes with my venue. Its a 55 acre mountain ranch with 6 large "cabins", more like houses with how many bedrooms etc

Our set up is similar, it’s a large facility with tons of supplies, dishes, tables and chairs. But no staff to take care of things. We could hire their people but I already don’t want to pay more lol. And we’re having an offbeat wedding and don’t want to scare them lmao.
Our caterer owns a food truck and is doing it buffet style but the dishes aren’t part of the contract.

We are doing a cookout with a burger bar and are using disposables. I know a lot of people say no disposables under any circumstances but I believe it is perfectly fine for what you are doing.

I totally plan on using the nice disposable stuff. There are some really nice ones that look real and can go in the dishwasher.

We are having 200 - 250 guests, and are trying to keep our budget as low as possible and still have our "dream" wedding. Plates & flatware are just not something I care about or think my guests will care about. So, we will have disposable everything! I don't think there is anything wrong with it, unless you are planning a very formal ballroom type event.
