Disney vows!

Apb216, on December 2, 2014 at 11:04 AM Posted in Planning 0 26

We're having a non-religious Disney themed ceremony and I wrote our vows using only Disney quotes (trying to stray far away from any sort of traditional things). I'd really like your opinions/suggestions/edits, it doesn't feel quite right to me. I will post in the comments below since I cannot seem to attach the file and don't have enough characters here.

1) Do you ya'll think I should get this printed onto cards for guests to follow along with?

2) More importantly, I'd like to hear from people who are NOT very familiar with Disney and if you think some guests might not understand any of it.

Credit to you for creativity. I would probably run through them with friends or family that don't know what you are doing and ask them if the vows make sense. If they have trouble understanding then maybe do a note of your plans in the program. I don't think vows need to be printed for anyone to follow along.

Friends and family are gathered here today to witness the marriage between Matt and Amanda, as they join together and become a family.

    In Hawaii, Ohana means family.

Family means nobody gets left behind,

    or forgotten.

    [Lilo & Stitch]

    So this is love…

this is what makes life divine.

    [Cinderella]

    What is love?

Love is a song that never ends.

    [Bambi]

    It’s bittersweet and strange,

    finding you can change,

    learning you were wrong.

    [Beauty & the Beast]

And people always do crazy things

    when they’re in love.

    [Hercules]

    Listen with your heart,

    you will understand.

    [Pocahontas]

    There may be something there

    that wasn’t there before.

    [Beauty & the Beast]

    Trust your heart,

    let fate decide.

    [Tarzan]

    If you keep on believing,

    the dreams that you wish

    will come true…

    [Cinderella]

Just as when Amanda wished upon a star,

    her dreams came true.

    [Pinocchio]

As the great Walt Disney said:

    “Laughter is timeless,

    Imagination has no age,

    and dreams are forever”

    [Walt Disney]

    Teaching Matt,

that some people are worth melting for.

    [Frozen]

To face the future with another,

who means more than any other,

    is to be loved.

    [The Rescuers]

Matt, do you promise to love Amanda unlike any other?

    (I do)

Amanda, do you promise to share your life in boundless love with Matt?

    (I do)

So to spend a life in endless bliss,

    just find who you love

    through true love’s kiss!

    [Enchanted]

    (bride & groom kiss)

    I present to you,

    Now and forever more,

    [Tarzan]

    always,

    [Harry Potter]

    Mr. & Mrs. Graybill!!

Creative, but Well, honestly I think it is over the top. You can include Disney without being overwhelming. Side note- Harry potter isn't a Disney movie

Is this the entire ceremony or just the vows? they are very long and do not fully flow together, but for the most part, are "cute". we have 2 Disney quotes in our personal repeat after me vows, from The Incredibles and Tangled. but overboard looks childish.

Its a little hard to follow, even having it in front of me. I would chose a few quotes that are meaningful to you and incorporate them with a more traditional ceremony.

I just read them aloud without the movie notation, to a gf, we are both huge Disney fans. they do not flow very well and just sounded like i was reading off the cute quotes. try to elaborate with "real" writing and sprinkle disney in sparingly.

our disney line is "Our life together will be our greatest adventure, because when I am with you, I’m where I’m meant to be."

Overall I really like it. BUT, until the last few lines when you got to the "I do's" it didn't sound like they were vows to me. It sounded more like a reading.

I get at the end that you're vowing to love each other, but the actual vowing part is a lot weaker than traditional vows in my opinion. It makes it sound easy, all lovey dovey and perfect. Vows are about committing to each other no matter in what challenges life might take you through.

I don't think you need to give cards to people for them to following along. The wording flows well enough and they can be meaningful and Disney to you, and if non-Disney fans don't get it, it still flows well -- you don't need to ram it down their throats saying "THIS IS DISNEY".

    Like in this part:

    Listen with your heart,

    you will understand.

    [Pocahontas]

    There may be something there

    that wasn’t there before.

    [Beauty & the Beast]

    Trust your heart,

    let fate decide.

So what if you aren't in love anymore one day? What if the love isn't burning like fire. Should you follow your heart and divorce?

I adore Disney, but even I got lost reading after a few lines. I think people will be super bored whether or not they love Disney. It's just way too much.

I like the idea, but as someone who doesn't know Disney at all, I wouldn't realize that is what you were doing, so it might be a bit choppy.

I think it would be cute if you had signs throughout your aisle like on shephard hooks with the quotes! What I would do is for the reception have each table named after a different movie, with each quote on the table

I can understand why people would think it's overboard, but I can't stand regular vows cuz everyone has heard them a billion times and even different variations drive me nuts and don't feel personal to me in any way. I haven't been able to find a ton of ways to incorporate Disney into the wedding without being tacky so I thought maybe the vows were where we could get kooky. We aren't doing any personal vows, as neither of us are thrilled about so many people staring at us and we don't want to speak, so this is the entire ceremony. We're aiming to stand up there no longer than 10 minutes, less if we can help it. The funny part is this is the much shorter version! One of my bridesmaids is an English teacher and helped me a bit but was having trouble with it too. In my head, our friend that's marrying us, will be speaking each line at a time...not one big speech (if that makes any sense). But I loved hearing the feedback!

Oh and @Emmy, the Harry Potter part is because I have the deathly hallows always tattoo and HP is *almost* as big a deal to me as Disney. I originally was going to tie in all my favorite epics like HP, Twilight (don't judge me), LOTR, and Disney but decided it was all too much and stuck to Disney, mostly because the only reason I agreed to go on that first date with my fiance was because he challenged my Disney knowledge. I definitely wanted the Always to tie in somewhere.

I have Disney toasting flutes, cake serving set, cake topper, and my decoration beside my guest book is the flower in the glass dome from Beauty and the Beast. I also have blue Disney font "I Do" stickers on my shoes. Basically everything Disney in my wedding is either hidden or subtle because it's more for me than anyone else. I think e=mc2 has a good idea with the table numbers.

Not a big fan. I like the idea, it's very creative. But I don't think it will get executed correctly. I think you should go with something more "traditional" and change it up a bit and add some lines in. So that there are some Disney lines, but not every line is Disney. I don't think it will run smoothly otherwise. Also Harry Potter isn't Disney :p

Edit : oh yeah there's lots of ways to incorporate Disney, or anything else, without it being tacky or too obvious. Subtlety is key.

This is my attempt to make it flow a bit better:

Friends and family are gathered here today to witness the marriage between Matt and Amanda, as they join in marriage and become a family.

Family means nobody gets left behind,

    or forgotten.

    What is love?

Love is a song that never ends.

And if you keep on believing,

    the dreams that you wish

    will come true…

Just as when Amanda wished upon a star,

    and her dreams came true.

As the great Walt Disney said:

    “Laughter is timeless,

    Imagination has no age,

    and dreams are forever”

    She taught Matt,

that some people are worth fighting for. - (Melting sounds really strange and Mulan has the song about fighting for the girl)

Matt thought "So this is love…"

Love is what makes life divine.

Love is to face the future with another,

who means more than any other.

This is what it means to be loved.

Matt, do you promise to love Amanda unlike any other?

Lady Monk, you're right. it sounds like fate will decide if the marriage lasts, not choice & actions.

we wrote the entire ceremony, none of it is anything typical or heard before. we wrote our own repeat after me vows. its about making the effort. not repeating things people have heard before, whether in movies or in wedding.

take some time, make the extra effort, you have a ton.

Someone here a while back was thinking about using the old vintage style movie posters as table numbers, they have some great ones.
