Would this offend you?

Tina, on June 14, 2016 at 1:30 AM Posted in Planning 0 75

Obviously not everyone attending our wedding would be Buddhist, but we wanted to include these as place card holders. We also wanted it to represent good luck and fortune to our guests as well. But we did not want to offend people with other faiths.

Offend me? Never. What offends me is a cash bar. If I were offended by the religious/philosophical beliefs of the bridal couple, I'd be the closed minded idiot. Go right ahead and adorn your ceremony and reception with whatever elements reflect your beliefs.

If someone gets offended they know where the door is. They're cute.

I wouldn't be offended at all. I would respect the fact that this is your wedding and you can have what you want at your wedding! I would honestly think they were cute.

If you guys are Buddhist then I wouldn't be offended, if you're not then it could be seen as perhaps culturally insensitive but not something I would be personally offended by. If couples gave out crosses (I'm Jewish) I might think it's a little odd and might not take mine home but I still wouldn't be offended!

I think they're fine! I would want the wedding to reflect the couple even if we believe in different things or nothing at all.

I'm an atheist but how many weddings have I been to with scripture readings. Nearly all of them but no complaints from me!

Definitely not. I worked in a restaurant for years owned by a Buddhist. We had a giant one of these by the host stand and no guest ever said they felt offended. When they did say something it was usually that they thought it was cool and touched it. I would use these, they're an awesome way to make your reception more you.

I'm only offended if you are not Buddhist. If you're just using the. Foe 'good luck' and 'cute' then no. It's wildly inappropriate.

I wouldn't be offended at all. I am atheist and I have been to many religious wedding ss. The only time I was offended by religion at a wedding was when the Christian minister started his sermon attacking gay marriage. Expressing your beliefs is okay, attacking others with different beliefs is not.

Yea I have to agree with Jo on this one. If you guys are actually Buddhist then I think they're great. But if it's just because you think they're cute then it could come across as insensitive. I'm not sure why it is, but for whatever reason, Buddhist symbols are so easily available just as decoration and it almost becomes more of a "décor" than a religious symbol. I mean we have a store in a little village near us that sells a ton of Buddhist stuff. I think it's all cute but I wouldn't have a statue of Buddha in my home if I wasn't Buddhist. Just like an atheist wouldn't have crosses as their centerpieces.

This is really poor taste if you are not actually Buddhist. Religious symbols are not free to use as "props" just because they are cute. If you are Buddhist, and I saw these as a guest, I wouldn't be offended.

ETA: to acknowledge Spazzy's great info! Makes my comment a moot point. Thank you @Spazzy!
