Wedding Dresses - Dealing With Opinions

SoontobeMrsZ, on October 13, 2016 at 10:35 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

I have been looking in magazines and on Pinterest for wedding dresses and went to one store, but had no luck. I found one dress I am in love with and am convinced is the one. I looked all over for salons that carry it and only one does, so I made an appointment. My mom has not liked any of the dresses I show her and showed zero interest in the one I love. She basically told me any store will carry lace dresses, not understanding I need to try on this specific one. She is in love with a dress I tried on at the other store that I do not like (keeps telling me how pretty it is and some layers can be taken out to make me feel more comfortable).

I don't need everyone to love my dress to say yes, but wish my mom would be on board like she was with my sister. Has anyone experienced this? If so, any advice?

I have not experienced this. That being said has your mom said anything to you about why she doesn't like the dress? Maybe she sees something you don't or has her own vision of what she thought you would look like or what kind of dress you would get. You have lots of time as well, so talk to her. There maybe something she is not telling you.

My mom found a dress that she absolutely loved on me. Made her and my sisters cry and everything. But I knew it wasn't the dress for me it was uncomfortable and I couldn't move in it. So the dress I fell in love with, she wasn't on board with either until my wedding day.

If you love it, it will show when you wear it.

Maybe once she sees it on you she'll see what you love about it. If you absolutely love it and she doesn't i think you should just do what makes you happy. It would be awesome if everyone agreed with you but it just may not happen. A good dress consultant may help you find common ground. I've had all sorts of opinions from family regarding shoes(I should wear heels and I don't even think I'll be able to keep flats on. HaHa) dances with everyone (dad I can understand but mom, ffil, etc. gets boring I think) when to do the cake, etc. You can't please everyone.

I went just with my cousin/moh to pick a dress. I invited all my girls & the parents after the fact, and said "here it is everyone" lol. I didn't want too many opinions. I fell in love with the very first dress I tried on... tried on 6 others just to make sure, but when i put that original one back on... it was just perfect. Maybe if you try it on with all the accessories she will come around? I feel that if you are set on having a particular dress... maybe she isn't in love with it now, but when she sees how happy it makes you and see how beautiful you look on the day of the wedding, she will come around. I definitely think you should ultimately pick the dress YOU love, parents will love it eventually, because ultimately they want to see their children happy. Smiley smile

The only reason I took my mom dress shopping with me is because I knew that if I loved something, she would act like she loved it too even if she didn't. That's also the only reason I showed pics to my friends, one of whom is very opinionated about fashion.

The only way to avoid this is to go alone, or you can (and should) tell her how you feel. It is your dress (assuming you are paying for it) and it is your choice.

Get the dress that is #1 in your budget and #2 you feel amazing in! My granny kept telling my mom how she liked the dresses the girl next to me was trying on at David's Bridal better than the ones I was trying on. I didn't take it personally and finally my mom told granny "we cant afford those!"

My mother offered to buy the dress I wanted... but then keeps sending me pictures of more traditional dresses. I kind of get what you are talking about.

My mom kept pushing me to get this one dress so that she could wear it if she ever got remarried someday. I was like nope! Definetly not MY dress then. She still wound up liking the dress I picked because she knew it was what I envisioned. She'll understand and be happy for you when she sees the happiness on your faceSmiley smile

@OGAlecia same...although my mom and I have similar taste, I did ask her beforehand to hold her tongue if she didn't like a dress until I said something about it first, unless it truly did not look flattering on me.

I didn't take my mother with me during my wedding dress shopping because she's the type to say "You're too fat in that thing.' I showed her photos of my dress after that fact.

I had problems with conflicting opinions - my mom and sis loved the dress they saw me in best. My BMs liked a different dress THEY saw me in best. Each group thought the other dress was 'not as pretty'.

Ultimately I had to decide for myself, based on pricing, construction (only 1 had an inner corset) and shipping time. I went back to the salon several times alone, tried each with different accessories and petticoats, to make sure I was picking a dress that I would love best.

The only opinion that truly matters is yours. If your mom clearly sees that you love it and it makes you happy... she'll love it too. If not... oh well!

My mom is the same way. I was previously engaged and bought a dress and she is still hung up on that one. I've paid for both so it's not like she's angry about being out any money. But I found my dress a month ago and am completely in love. It's a tea length dress, simple embellishments, and when I put it on, it was like magic. I was done. My mom just looked at me, shrugged, and said "I cried at the other dress. You looked like a bride in that dress." She's just so passive aggressive and rude. I also took my MOH because I knew my mom would probably be annoying like that and I needed someone on my side. My mom and I have always been polar opposites and hardly agree on anything. We bicker and clash more often than not. So, thanks to my MOH the experience was so much better. Had it not been for her, I probably would have left without a dress. I guess the only advice I have is to try to not let it get to you. Take someone with you guys that will be excited for your happiness and not be petty or over opinionated. Like others have said, it's YOUR day. You need to love your dress. No other opinions matter. You're going to be beautiful and everyone will fall in line once they see how happy you are :-)
