Registry related: Which Standmixer?

Sara, on March 21, 2013 at 1:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

A KitchenAid stand mixer is a very common registry item. I really want one, but am having a hard time deciding which one. Right now I have the 4.5 qt ($299 at Target on my registry). I am debating if I should switch it to a different one? Any comments/suggestions?

Also checking out my registry, I see that a breadbasket (comes with warming stones that fit in a pocket!) that I was excited about got discontinued Smiley sad

Edited: I put the link to the one I registered for below. And it is $299, not $399 like I originally posted.

I don't have advice about the stand mixer, but I do have to say that I understand the disappointment about the discontinued items. I had a drainboard on there that I LOVED, just looked at my registry and it is discontinued. I might try to find it elsewhere as I only set up one of my registries so far.

I registered for two different ones, I decided I don't know the difference so if anyone gets it and knows the difference they can make the decision. I did a 5qt because it was a little bigger and the target one looked a little small. Also look to see which takes the most attachments there may be a difference

This is the one I registered for: http://www.target.com/p/kitchenaid-4-5-qt-ultra-power-stand-mixer-multiple-colors-available/-/A-10661166

It is $299, not $399. It is one of the cheaper ones and doesn't come with too many accersories (I can always buy them seperately). This one has fabulous Target reviews, but I am not sure if I will later on wish I had the 5 qt. I also thought registering for the more affordable one would increased the liklihood I would receive it.

I can't even remember which one I registered for either. Heck, I wouldn't know the difference. I just want it because you can use it for multiple things. And I heard it makes ice cream!!!

I have a 5 quart kitchenaid & I'm in love with it! I've had it for probably 5 years now and use it for pretty much everything under the sun. I even have pasta maker attachments and ice cream maker attachments. The only couple attachments I'm missing I put on my registry! It's pretty fantastic.

Crystal: I would use a stand mixer for baking, so cookie dough, cake batter, and definately frosting. I would also like to eventually get the attachments such as the meat grinder and the pasta maker. Not sure if I could ever justify buying the ice cream maker. Currently I am not much of a bread baker. Secretly, I would love to be a SAHM and make everything from scratch! I am sure that when I have a stand mixer, I will go crazy finding new ways to use it!

I have the 5.5 quart mixer with the bowl lift, instead of the tilting head. I personally love the lift much better. I would consider thinking about your cabinet height. With the tilt head it may get in the way when tilted but the bowl lift is taller all around. They all can fit the same attachments so it's really up to you how want it to look, the height and the different llifting options.

Alright, I just changed my registry to have the 5 qt instead of the 4.5 qt. Now let's just hope I get it! If not, FH knows what I want for Christmas!

I have the professional one with the bowl lift and love it. We purchased it at Costco when they had it on sale. No regrets.

We registered for the 6qt pro. I have been looking for one for a year. The other models have started being made with plastic gear housings and apparently are more likely to break if you use any thicker dough, etc. The 6qt is the only one with metal gears and a metal gear housing. Just do a quick google search about it and you can find some of the problems people have had with the housings snapping and breaking. I think it more depends on what you are going to use it for.
