Your parents aren't required to pay for your wedding. Pay for it yourselves if they aren't able to contribute.

Pay for the wedding yourself? Your parents seem emotionally supportive. But seem as if they are unable to provide financial support, which is totally fine. Accept their emotional support and excitement, and plan to pay for things on your own.

Your parents arent required to pay for anything unless they offer to. If you're not able to throw together a big wedding by that day on your own dime then I would recommend going for something small, eloping and having a celebration of marriage later, or postponing altogether. You need to determine how much you can afford to spend on your wedding and if your parents toss anything in that's a bonus.

I wanted a quicker engagement as well, but FH and I knew we could not afford to get married in the fall with a short engagement and ended up moving ours to the summer. It has been nice to be able to purchase things but by bit, in order to pay for it by ourselves.

You pay for it yourself or until you have a check in hand.

I'm kinda confused. You can't get married bc your parents can't pay for it? There is no getting them on board, money does not grow on trees and weddings are expensive.

Pay for your own wedding and if you can't afford it elope or wait.

Pay for your own wedding. Or wait and pay for it then.

Technically, you're financially responsible for the wedding unless your parents have offered to pay. They are in no way obligated. If they want to pay for the wedding but are expressing that they need more time to save money, you can consider pushing your wedding back.

Your parents aren't required to pay for it. You & your FH can pay for it. Your parents have already told you money is an issue for them. Of course they are dismissing everything. They can't afford it. They have already said this. They are emotionally supportive which is great and I'm sure they will help when they can, where they can.

This post and these comments make me feel so much better. I thought I was the only one paying for my own wedding!

If they sent a message to you saying that they'd prefer you not to get married until they can support this union financially, I'm going to assume that they'd like to make a monetary contribution to your wedding. That being said, they are in no way obligated to pay for your wedding. If they are able to, okay! If they are unable to, that's still okay!

If you want to get married, you and your FH are financially responsible for your wedding unless someone else (a) offers to pay for a portion or all of it and (b) you have that money in hand. Tell your parents you aren't expecting a dime from them and go about planning a wedding you can afford.

This is confusing, are you expecting them to pay for your wedding? Just reassure then that no money is necessary from them, just their love and support.

Ok my message may have not been worded right! I should add in uk it is tradition for the brides father to pay for reception! That being said we arnt all that traditional and so my fiances parents and ourselves have all tried to reassure my parents they are NOT paying for it themselves that we will all chip in and make it work....after all of that they are still dismissive and unsupportive...i am not asking how do i get my parents to pay lol i am asking for suggestions as to how to pull off a decent wedding on not a massive budget in under a year!!

It's also tradition for a dowery to be given, but that's not common anymore. And, although it's traditional for the bride's parents to pay for things - that's not realistic nor should it be expected any longer. Your parents are responsible for $0 unless they offer.

You will either need to find a way to pay for what you want, or change what you're going to have, or change the date of your wedding so you can save up and afford it.

No one should pay for your wedding but you and your FH.

Limit the guest list. Go to the courthouse or have your family minister perform the ceremony and book a private room at a nearby restaurant. Limit drinks to beer and wine.

Its tradition here in America as well for the brides family to pay for the wedding, but that doesn't mean they can or have to.

I have told my parents that....but they are still dismissive and giving off about timescales despite me clearly telling them they are not expected to pay! Wow i thought these forums were about giving tips and support bride to bride....iv simply been made to feel shitter than i already did.....cheers!!!
