NWR: Texans I have questions

After FH and I are wed, we are going to relocate to Texas to get the hell out of California. I have been doing a lot of research of different towns in TX. I hear most Californians move to Austin. After FH and I are wed, we are going to relocate to Texas to get the hell out of California. I have been doing a lot of research of different towns in TX. I hear most Californians move to Austin. There doesn't seem to be a lot of work for us in that area. We are in the aviation/aerospace industry and a lot of those companies are in Dallas-Fort Worth area. I like Waco but there is just not as much work and I am not willing to commute two hours one way. Online isn't going to tell me what towns in Fort-Worth are the run down bad areas...other than crime rate. What towns in Fort worth area do you recommend?

That's what I'm seeing online for Arlington. I haven't looked in Plano too heavily

    Seems fine for Arlington.

I know people who grew up there. They're all alive and fine, but I never visited them and thought 'MAN this is great place to live." - ever.

I'm moving to San Antonio soon. Live in Austin now. yes, EVERYONE moves to Austin! Smiley laugh lol

House prices anywhere decent are ridiculous here. You can get so much more for your money in San Antonio than in Austin. I can't speak to anywhere else in Texas.

Also, traffic in Austin is HORRENDOUS. You won't be living anywhere near central Austin with a 200k budget. I don't know if that matters to you or not. It can take an hour in traffic to do what is a 10 or 15 minute drive with no traffic. And traffic extends way beyond run hours. I just heard on the radio that Austin is ranked 4th in all of USA for awful traffic. Austin is really cool, but I actually prefer San Antonio. There are lots of great places in between as well. Better to just visit Austin after moving to TX Smiley winking

ETA: I just noticed you more wanted hear about neighbourhoods in DFW Smiley winking Well... I gave my 2 cents anyway haha

I just bought my house in far north Garland (almost Sachse) for less than $140k! I'm not super familiar with Fort Worth but if you're looking in Dallas I would stay outside the 635 loop. Anything inside will either be a less than great neighborhood or a really nice one that's wayyy overpriced. Good luck on your house hunt!

I grew up in Hurst (DFW area) and currently live in Austin. My two cents is that Austin is way better than DFW, but DFW is not bad. I could give you city recommendations, but it all depends on if you will be working in Dallas or Fort Worth. For Fort Worth, I would recommend Colleyville. For Dallas, I would recommend Rowlett.

My son and 3 grandchildren live in Keller which is the Northwest corner of Fort Worth. We visit at least every two months and find it to be easy to maneuver and find anything you could want just about. I've seen lots of nice 3 bedroom starter homes (doesn't seem like anyone has much of a yard) under 200K

We'll IDK if Houston is still on the table OP but I'll give you some info about our house. Brand new, decent neighborhood (not a top but we love it, we also don't have kids yet either though so the school district doesn't bother us, and by the time we have kids of school age we suspect we'd move- by then were would have lived in this house 8-9 years). 2400 sqft, $178,000. Decent size back yard- about 4 times bigger than the front, big enough for kids. Came with all appliances. Love my house. Cost of living is very do-able. Love the no state income taxes. Be prepared for the shock bc you'll be going from liberal to pretty conservative.

    Beautiful home FFW

We are trying to move somewhere a little more calm. The town I live in is where Six Flags Magic Mountain is located and a normal street is literally 8 lanes wide. That's just a normal street. That just says how crowded and busy my town is.

Austin is over-saturated and while jobs are available the income is not as good as other areas of Texas. I live in Arlington and in a very nice area but a bit on the pricey side (Viridian). Job market is great in DFW along w/pretty good pay. Cost of living in Texas as a whole is good. Houston outskirts are nice but the traffic is terrible :-/ Every area has its pros and cons. Figure out what's important to you and go from there. I do recommend renting before buying so you get a feel for the area.

..California traffic is horrid and so are the housing prices and taxes. Anything in DFW is going to be better in those aspects. Legit throw a dart at the map of the metro area and you'll be living better than you were in CA. I lived in the SF Bay Area for 10 years and FH & I are from Texas.

I live in Fort Worth.. lived in Arlington for a couple of years while I was going to school and I hated it. Has a little too much traffic for me. Grand Prairie is close to that and seems a lot nicer to me. But there's pros and cons to every place!

If you're looking for calm, I wouldn't recommend Dallas, Fort Worth, or the cities directly in between them (Grand Prairie, Arlington, Irving). Traffic is a nightmare, and it all kind of overlaps so it's hard to avoid the not-great parts. If you're looking around Ft. Worth specifically, I would recommend HEB (Hurst, Euless, Bedford), Southlake, or southern Denton county (e.g. Flower Mound or Lewisville). Grapevine/Colleyville are also nice. Ft. Worth is actually my recruitment area for work and I live in Allen (in between Plano and McKinney), so I am very well acquainted with the area and would love to help with any specific questions!

Tiny Bride- both the companies you mentioned are our customers! I would like to get into Lockheed-Martin in Dallas. I am well acquainted with a lot of the engineers at a lot of the aviation aerospace companies that are branched/based in that area. Especially all air force bases as we design the pedestals for all their satellites.

SAD- Too bad they took away the availability for PM... *sigh* I have been looking into all the little towns in FW but it's difficult when I don't exactly know the traffic of the area etc... And I know we won't be able to get around to all the little towns in the area in one trip.
