NWR/KWR: Sketchy people

ValZtoB, on November 16, 2014 at 5:07 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 16

So, I have a wedding gown that I purchased used that I was intending to wear. FH, however, had other plans and bought me my dream gown. Such a sweetie.

Anyway, I decided to list it on a FB site to try to sell. Today I get a message from someone asking if I was negotiable on the price. I told her to private message me and we will discuss it. She sent me a private message telling me that she's actually looking for free (which I'm not adverse to) because "I'm getting married next week but I just found out today that I have cancer and my doctor says I may not make it that long". Her FB page says she has been married since 2009. I feel bad, but I'm not sure what to do. If I could not sell it, I planned to PIF it, but I want to help someone who really needs it.

IDK. Thoughts?

Perhaps ask her why her page says she's been married since 2009? Luckily since she's just on FB if she goes crazy you can block her and move on.

If she had plans already to get married next week, shouldn't she already have a dress? And her FB says she's already married. Also, I'm pretty sure her doctor didn't tell her she'll be dead by next week.

    Something doesn't sound right.

I don't think there's anything wrong with asking her why her Facebook says one thing and she's telling you another.. it's your dress. It's always nice to do something for someone like that but it's not crazy for you to question her either..

Unfortunately people would lie boldly to your face...

I know on our local FB wedding pages we have scammers ALL the time and it's always that they have cancer, and can't afford a dress and they are getting married next week, 2 weeks from now, etc.

If I looked at her FB page and it said she was married since 2009 then that would be it for me. I would not give her the dress.

It's a scam - we had an on going issue on the local thrift/rummage FB site regarding wedding dresses, designer shoes, baby items, etc. There was always someone dying of cancer, their baby was deathly ill, someone wanted a "dream prom" and so on. All the free stuff ended up at a local consignment store for top dollar or the items were being flipped and sold on Ebay.

Sounds like a scam to me, if you really want to give it to the needy you could check with a local food bank and put the word out that you have a dress, or same if there is a hospital association. They will know who might be in need and actually be needy not just a liar.

Yeah. She isn't getting it. Her Facebook says that she's been married since 2009. She said that she was just told that she has cancer today, yet she told me that she has spent all of her money on chemo. Then, she sent me another message asking me to deliver the dress an hour and a half away when her Facebook says that she lives in the next town over. Totally sketchy

Wow you think if she was going to lie about it she would at least get her story down. Sorry you had to deal with someone like that. Lying about cancer or dying is about as low as you can get. I'm glad you didn't give her the dress.

I don't get the lying! The dress was only listed for $75. I would have come down. I figure it was a ploy to get it for free to sell herself or an attempt to lure me to rob me....or worse. It just happened here recently.

It's a scam. No one tells a cancer patient how long he/she has to live anymore. As my oncologist put it, "you don't have an expiration date." Anyone who tells you they have xx time to live is full of sh*t. Unfortunately there are low-lifes out there who will scam for anything.

So, she has terminal cancer and not a single friend or family member in her life is willing to help her buy a wedding gown? Not a single bridal salon is willing to donate a gown for a terminally ill bride? I don't believe it. Please, walk away.
