NWR: Is it just me, or is this totally random?

yadayada, on February 25, 2010 at 6:18 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

So my husband got accepted to a grad program in Chicago and so there's a pretty good chance we will be moving there in the fall. I've started doing some research on jobs and whatnot, and to that effect I emailed this guy who I had met at a couple of conferences and who works in Chicago in my same field. In my email I asked him about job prospects in the area, whether he knew if organizations were hiring (as opposed to experiencing severe budget cuts, etc.) Anyway, he totally ignored my email and instead added me as a friend on facebook! Huh?? Does anyone else find this strange? He's about my age but I would have thought he would have had the professionalism to answer a work-related email!! I would like to follow up but not sure how to go about it. I am thinking of waiting a couple of days and then emailing him through facebook being all like "did you get my other email?" Any suggestions are welcome. Unfortunately he is one of very few contacts I have in the area...

Maybe he is checking with different people he knows in companies to see who is hiring? Maybe wait a few days and the do a followup email.

Honestly, alot of companies look at potential employees facebooks alooootttt. its getting very popular, so make sure everything on your facebook page is appropriate. there have been people recently who didnt get a job because they had lots of pics of them being drunk and crazy on their pages! he might just be checking up on you before he goes ahead and puts your name out there.

I do think that is strange, but perhaps Hilton is right and he is trying to put your face with your name. I would give him a few days and maybe follow up with another email or a call. A Linked In account is also a good way to network for finding a new job as well. Good luck!!!

If you sent it to a work email, he may be being watched and not want to answer on there. Perhaps he added you on FB as another, more casual, means of communication. Or, maybe he was trying to put a face to your name, since you don;t know eachother well?I would ask him via FB if he got your email, and whether he would like to answer it.

Devine, thanks for the heads up, although ironically it is HIS facebook that is full of pictures with him at parties, wearing silly hats, etc. Thankfully the only embarrassing stuff I have on mine are pictures where I look fat, LOL. I am also fortunate in that I work for non-profits, and people don't care too much about that type of stuff as long as it doesn't affect your work. If I end up applying to more "serious" jobs I may have to create another profile or something.

Color me naive but I don't understand this business of checking facebook pages. First of all, my facebook page is private.

@Hilton, I have only spoken to him at conferences, and I didn't feel like I knew him well enough to call him (plus I didn't have his #) but was able to find his email from a mass email that was sent to people who attended one of the conferences.

What's strange to me is that I sent him the email from my work email, but my facebook is registered under my personal email, so he would have had to do a search for my name and at that point he would have seen my photo and known who I was without adding me.

....I just noticed he has 712 friends so maybe he is just a FB fiend!

@yadayada...that is just strange. I know these days facebook is being used as a great social media marketing tool; but if you are not in marketing I do not understand why he would connect with you on FB and not respond to your e-mail. At the very least with the response of, "I will look into a few things and get back to you." Then connect with you thru LinkedIn or FB. It is a shame that this person is one of your few contacts in Chi-town. What I would recommend is what @Hilton said is if you don't have one create a LinkedIn profile and join groups on that site that are related to your industry; there has to be tons related to non-profit. Once you are in those groups there are TONS of networking going on. I have actually gotten a job thru LinkedIn because of an industry specific group I joined. Good Luck

@ladylee companies are into checking FB profiles these days because they feel you represent them at all times-you are 100% right keep it private! No friend=no view!

Yadayada - What field are you in? I live the Chicago area. Not sure I am able to help, but if I hear of anything I can let you know. It never hurts to try! : )

Maybe he is more into socializing than helping others through networking...

Or he is figuring out job prospects for you.

Or he just doesn't know because he is ignorant or he is about to get fired himself.........
