Not really wedding, but kinda. Delivery charges for rehearsal?

Mozabrat, on June 8, 2018 at 6:34 PM Posted in Parties and Events 0 14

We are having a kind of get together for the out of town family and then a rehearsal after. The food we are having delivered is $1818.77 for the food, tax and delivery charge of $150.00. We are three miles from the restaurant. The restaurant is just dropping off pans of food. No set up or serving, no utensils, napkins, plates or cups. Nothing. The venue is handling all of that as part of the rehearsal package I paid for. This is BBQ food...nothing fancy. The drinks and such we will pay the venue for. On the bottom of the invoice, there is a $275.00 gratuity charge. For served food, or food that they set up and clean up, I wouldn't blink an eye, but this is simply pans being delivered and set down. That is all. There is already a $150.00 fee for that. Is it normal to pay a $150 delivery fee and a 15% gratuity for food delivered only? I get the delivery fee for wrapping it up and delivering it down the street, but the gratuity, I think is a little much considering the venue will be serving, setting up and tearing down...not the restaurant. Is this normal? Am I just being ridiculous?

**This was their proposal invoice...I have not signed or paid for anything yet. I just want to know if this is normal or if it is excessive. I didn't want to say anything if it is normal. Just seems like a lot of money to me for simple drop off.

    What does your contract say?

That sounds a bit much to me! I feel like the delivery charge is fine, but like you said gratuity for them not doing anything more then delivery is unnecessary! But do you have any other options? If you do maybe tell the manager that you plan to go elsewhere because of that and they may change their mind about losing that sale? (Again, only I you have other options)

This seems like one you could talk them out of — if not, take your $ elsewhere.

This is their proposal. Not a contract. I am just wondering if this is normal or if it is excessive before I call and question the charges.

I would question it. Send like a bit much for dropping off and going.

Sounds excessive to me too. Good thing you looked it over carefully. Gratuities tend to go hand in hand with some sort of servicing-type of service being provided and the quality of said service. If they won’t budge on it, I would pass.

I just looked at 2 proposals we had from the same caterer. One was the usual caterer-served quote - which had a $240 gratuity. The other was for drop off only. It still had gratuity added but was only $75.

    Definitely ask.

I would ask for the fee to be waived. Can’t hurt since you’re buying so much food

The delivery fee typically goes to the establishment itself and the gratuity would go to the people delivering the food. $1,800 of food I can imagine is a lot of food. And usually those delivering it did all the packaging as well, then they have to haul it all into the venue.

That's a very good point. More than "just dropping off the food" goes into delivery. If you tip your pizza guy (I hope you do) you should tip the people who deliver. If it seems like a bit much, maybe see if you can do pickup or something.

I would not pay that fee. Isn’t that what the delivery charge is?? It does seem excessive.

Agreed with Kat. When you order pizza for delivery, you are charged usually a $2 or $3 delivery fee by the restaurant, but the tip (gratuity) goes to the driver. That amount does still seem pretty high to me, I would negotiate for a lower gratuity.

And the suggested gratuity seems huge! But if a pizza man delivers you $10 worth of pizza, you could tip 15% and give him only $1.50. They’re delivering $1,800 of food. So 15% of that looks ridiculous, but makes sense mathematically.

Sounds like a lot for 3 miles... I would have someone pick it up for me and leave out the delivery altogether.
