Middle name to Maiden

Crazycatlady, on November 9, 2017 at 10:07 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 25

Has anyone changed their middle name to their maiden name? I want to keep my last name but also take my fiance's last name. I'm not a fan of hyphenating, so I thought as much as I hate my middle name I could just change it to my last name. Thoughts, comments, words of wisdom? Have you done this? How'd it go?

My sister in law did that! She never liked her original middle name, so it worked well for her.

One of my friends added it as a second middle name. She hasn't had any problems with it and she doesn't have to sign a hyphenated last name!

I think that's pretty common in the south. Every woman in my family has done that to my knowledge, and I plan to as well.

In Ohio it's not easy but I will be doing it. Our names are too long to hyphenate and I have an attachment to both.

It's my plan to do that. My understanding is that you (in most states) have to do pay for a legal name change. I'm notreally concerned about it's cost or how much of a hassle it is. It's my name. I'll have it every day for the rest of my life.

I did. I live in Ohio and while it's legally allowed, I went through 2 people at the BMV before the supervisor allowed it. They had to call probate court and verify it was legal. They said it's becoming more common but they still check each time. I had no issues at social security or anywhere else! So not really difficult.

I don't have a middle name so kept my maiden name and added my married name. I used it more as a middle name rather than hyphenated.

Yep Smiley smile I'm not named after anyone so replaced my middle name with my maiden. Happens to be the same MI, also.

I did it 30 plus yrs ago, in California. I never had a big attachment to my middle name, but I love that my maiden name is forever part of my full name. (I did not want to have a different name from my husband, nor did I want to hyphenate.)

My FMIL did that, and she passed on her original middle name to her daughter. It worked out for her Smiley smile

My mother did this. I added my maiden name to my middle name, dropping nothing.

My mom did it, and I plan on adding a second middle name with my last name! In fact, I think most people I know who have gotten married have done that. Speaking from VA here.

My aunt did this when she got married almost 30 years ago, it was in NJ and from what I was told she didn't have an issue. I never thought there would be any difficulty with this but form PPs stories my guess is you would do best to contact your local office that handles this type of thing and inquire with them directly about the process.

I did this in DC and it was just part of the normal name change process - I didn't have to do anything extra!

I'm now First Maiden Last and dropped my middle name. It's actually made the name change transition a lot easier for me because my names are now so short (maiden name is 4 letters and my new last name is 3) so I've just been putting my full name on all new ids, credit cards, etc. and it helps when I'm trying to explain that my name changed and they can clearly see my old last name listed as my middle!
