I have a silly question...

Torie, on March 9, 2011 at 5:32 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

Why does the brides name come first in everything? on the invites on the monogram.... but then after the wedding it's Mr. and Mrs... and the grooms name goes first? is there symbolism to that? because i think it looks and sounds better for his name to come first on our monograms/ invites but I don't want to change it if it's like that for a reason....

Cause the bride is the most important! Or maybe because the male name wants to be the final statement... hmm

Maybe it follows the custom "ladies first!" thing?

    I googled! here's what I found:

It goes back centuries ago when the young woman's parents would have a dowry to give to the groom to be. It's simply protocol (after all the bride's parents foot nearly the whole bill!)

I think it is because the bride's parents used to pay for the whole thing. And the 'proper' wedding invitations used to have their names on top and say that they were inviting you to the wedding of their daughter to mr so and so. I could be totally off, but that was my thinking. I personally like my name first! Smiley smile

I figure because the brides family used to host (and pay for) the wedding. Like the traditional invite reads Mr. and Mrs. BridesParents request your attendance at the wedding of Jane Something Smith to John Something Jones. It isn't really the same these days but it has been used for so long that people just think it sounds "right".

Of course you can put his name first! If you are paying for it you could put whatever you want on there! Heck you could put "Elmo invites you to the wedding of Torie'sFH and Torie" lol.

I think its because usually its the women doing all the leg work with that stuff. I think its more formal to have the Grooms name first.

Now that it's modern times, do put his name first on some things: like the thank you cards, the favors, the escort cards. Your name should be first on the decor, the invites. If you are doing a monogram, either way is fine. Do a mixture so that you both shine.

Because nobody cares who the groom is at the wedding. He's just supposed to show up and write checks, right?

But I guess he occassionally gets a say in things in the marriage... occassionally.
