How to handle this issue...

GrayCatVintage, on September 12, 2015 at 9:03 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

Numbers are due today and just now FH informs me of this issue:

We sent an invite to a single male friend who is friends with a large group of FH's buddies. Given that we decided long ago we did not want strangers showing up at the wedding we did not give this friend or three other single friends plus-one's. We already knew they would be coming as singles (two are actually groomsmen) so I was going to sit all the friends together. Furthermore, we are having several men coming without their wives/GF's so we are going to end up with three tables of singles. Again, all these people know each other. Well, one of the groomsmen told FH that one of the guests thought we were making fun of him for not giving him a plus one - as in making fun of the fact he is single. That was not the intent at all - and this person knows there are several other guests coming alone. Well, he apparently went to ALL the groomsmen (not FH) and threw a hissy over this (cont.)

Then to top this all off, he met some girl at a party that I guess I went to school with (I do not remember her) and she has now demanded that she be allowed to go with the single friend who is complaining that we invited him as a single. Why this guy did not decline the invite is beyond me OR why he went to EVERYONE ELSE IN THE BP except FH with this issue is also ridiculous. Now, not only do I not know how to address this issue but this girl he has only known for A WEEK has added me on Facebook...I just know any time now she will send me a message about the wedding. Should I explain to this guy that we were not trying to slight him at all and we were simply trying to avoid an overblown guest list and we had him in mind with the other singles? I am just so over this guest list BS I could scream.

Sorry that this drama is happening. I think your FH should have a chat with him. FH should tell him that FH heard he wasn't happy that he didn't get a plus one. FH should explain why in the exact way you said about. FH should then say that since you didn't give others plus ones that you can give him one as it's not in the budget for everyone to get one. Then have him say something to the effect of even though you can't invite his new girl friend you would love to go on a double date with them after the wedding. I would stick your ground on this one or others will ask for plus ones as well.

I would stick my ground. Have FH or you address him with "I heard you had some issues with your invitation. Unfortunately due to the (size, budget, or something, insert literally any excuse there) we are unable to accommodate plus ones. We're sorry that you felt offended but we still hope you can come." And just leave it at that. If he is still going to make a fuss tell him "We're sorry that he feels this way and we understand that you are now a decline"

This is a non-issue to me. I wouldn't even entertain this guy with a response. Ignore the girl, submit your numbers as is, and if he's going to be a little biggity bitch and not show, screw him. He doesn't get to tell you what to do just because he is ignorant of how a wedding is planned and a budget is set.

    I agree with RJmargo.

This groomsmen sounds annoying. The wedding isn't about him. Stand firm on your decisions and don't cater to his whinny self.

I think it would be best for your FH to talk to him.

It's not your responsibility to deal with a childish guest. He needs to get over himself.

I just could not believe that he went to ALL the groomsmen and made a stink but did not tell me or FH what was going on and furthermore I guess there was a lengthy discussion with this new girlfriend and her wanting to come when someone should have manned up and shut that shit down. I am absolutely going to submit numbers as is - I am not adding an extra because I know if he is being such a brat about this now he probably will not show up the day of.

Weddings can trigger certain feelings that make being single difficult, or a shot to the ego of sorts. I'd approach it delicately but stand your ground. She won't know anyone there, you don't know her, he needs to chill.

How immature! I can't believe he is throwing a fit and not just talking to your FH. I think it is up to FH to explain to this guy why you did what you did and that you guys aren't inviting plus ones. Have him be sensitive but firm. Good luck!

FH needs to talk to him and explain no plus ones for a reason. She added you on facebook, but did you add her? When someone wants to friend you, you have to confirm or ignore. Did you confirm her? IF so then just unfriend her.

First off, who is she to demand? With that said, this is FH`s friend, so he needs to put him in his place.

    #1 Screw her.

#2 He was invited as a single, let it stand. If he or girl does ask, tell them you are avoiding a bloated guest list, sorry...and leave it at that.

Screw them both and just pretend like this didn't even happen. They are both dumb asses.

It's your wedding. She doesn't get a demand. You don't have to explain anything to either of them.

Doesn't anyone else want to know why there are other guys attending without their wives or SOs? How does that happen?

Jeleebeenz, we have a few women attending ours already without that husbands. One is a friend and both husband and wife are doctors but only she was able to get off work. Ditto with a husband attending without his nurse wife. There's also a few female relatives on FH's size that are making a girls trip out of it without their husbands. Stuff happens.

Rebecca - yeah, stuff happens but that is usually the exception and not the rule. I was just curious if the wives/SOs were invited. Still am.

If you didn't hear it officially from him, you can either contact him and tell him what you heard or even better, ignore it entirely. Submit your numbers as is. You'll be too busy to care.

You don't say what the rest of the bridal party told him, but since they all likely knew about your situation, he was basically going around person by person to try to gang up on you with evidence of your"injustice" is what it sounds like. And if he went to them all, I'd hope he heard the same thing from every one, and the fact he kept it up says he's a whiney brat, and the fact he is saying a girl like that says a lot. sadly weddings often seem to be the death knell for long time friendships that have run their course... Agree with the others, ignore him and her, and let the chips fall where they may.
