DJ not understanding the music we want?

Mrs. Gresham, on September 1, 2011 at 11:38 AM Posted in Planning 0 13

Ok I gave my DJ a list of songs, about 20, there are only 3 songs that HAVE to be played (first dance, entry, and dance w dad) I have told him we like country and beachy kind of music. Now I dont know if maybe I am being too vague? I gave him a list with song that we like and I figured he could go off that and get the idea... How do I help him?

Has he told you that he thinks that you're being too vague? Maybe you could suggest some bands that you like so that he can get a better idea of your tastes.

Beachy could go in a few different directions… do you want Beach Boys or 311? Definitely give your DJ a list of bands that you like as well as specific songs or albums that you like from that artist. More importantly though is the do not play list. Let your DJ read the crowd and play music that the guests are enjoying most but let him know what songs make you cringe so he avoids them.

The bands are on the list! Thats why im so confused. I put the bands and a few songs from each band so I really dont know how much more detail I can give him.... I have Colby Calliet, Zack Brown Band, 311, sublime, bob marley, ect, these are all on the list I gave him with multiple songs from each band/artist. And I told him to let people request music and I gave him a do not play list/ type of music not to play...... He said to give him a genre.... but I have.....

Genre is so vague these days. If you've given him specific artists, that should be a huge sign as to the type of music you'd like.

Hmmm… that's annoying. He wants to hear pop/rap/reggae/oldies… He probably has a pre-set catalog of music that he uses over and over and he's not sure which file you belong in. Sounds like a lazy DJ to me! You have done more than you need to in order to guide him in the direction you want. I would send him a do not play list though. Maybe that will help him figure it out. If you send no rap/no techno/no.. whatever you don't want to hear… he'll at least know what file you aren't so he can narrow it down from there.

This was my exact email about what NOT to play

"Do not play Song/ Artist list:

Hank Williams, Hank Jr, or Hank III

    David Allan Coe

    Merle Haggard

Pretty much nothing from any artist like the above, I can tell you right now they will try, just tell them you dont have it!

    ICP

Kotton Mouth Kings exept Tangerine Sky as request by us on the list I gave you

I think you get the idea of what WE like and what I dont like lol so just use your good judgement!

One song I would like to add is a song I have heard on a movie (50 1st dates) I think the name of it is somewhere over the rainbow but not the wizard of oz one lol it was really beachy, let me know what you can find!

And any steel drum music would be good too!"

So thats my do not play list, I honestly dont know what to tell him.......

Lol @ the Insane Clown Posy (ICP)

I would give the DJ a wider list of what you want played. Someone could end up requesting blues, or classical (highly unlikely but u never know), jazz. Do you listen to more Rap, Country, HipHop, Pop, Oldies, Rock, ect? One persons idea of beach music may be totally different than others.

If the DJ is somewhat local....Is there a certain radio station you listen to? If you do and like most of the the songs on it, maybe you could tell him "I really like this station and enjoy most of the songs they play". Some radio stations have a couple different genres, but some are pretty specific - like Classic Rock or 100% popular random mix.

Here's my take (from an experienced Dj's perspective):

Your DJ might be "confused" because you've given him lots of "mood" music to play... but he might be asking or looking for more "dance" music.

Is your DJ experienced with weddings? This is something you should discuss with him before your wedding. We usually do a 2 hour planning session with our clients. Has he offered to do one with you?

    Good luck!

There are some brides that plan out every song the DJ will be playing, maybe he's just use to that?? I think off what your saying you maybe want some Kenny Chesney, Bob Marley, maybe some 311, Alan Jackson, etc....? BTW, that Over the Rainbow rendition is so beautiful....great pick

I would like to offer up a side note----If your first dance song, or any other important song has a long or edited version....make sure you go over with the DJ's which one you want. For my first wedding, our song was butchered and he played a short version. It was not ours or his fault, I didn't realize there was a short version, and he didn't realize there was a long version. It may help to listen to the important songs together with the DJ or band. I hope this makes sense.
