Attire for Opposite Sex Attendants

Rhiannon, on March 21, 2016 at 8:29 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

The future Hubby and I need some advice.....his sister is one of his bridal party attendants (Groomswoman, if you will) and my male best friend is one of my attendants (bridesman), and we are torn as to what each should wear....should sister match the bridesmaids and my bridesman match the groomsman? Should sister wear a black dress matching the tuxes?

We want each attendant to stand on the appropriate side, but also want pictures to look good. Any advice??

I don't think you needed to throw in that your male friend is gay because frankly, his sexual orientation is irrelevant. You're having a male attendant and that's all there is to it. Anyway. It would probably just be easiest to have him match the groomsmen. Same thing with your FH's sister -- she could wear the same dress as your bridesmaids...or you could have her in the same dress, just in black (if it comes in black).

I agree with Lauren J. Have his tux match the groomsmen and maybe see about getting the groomswoman the same dress as you BM but possibly in a dark grey or black

My husband had two groomsmaids, they wore black gowns to match the tuxes.

I didn't have a bridesman, but if I did, I would have asked him to wear a blue suit or tux to match my girls navy dresses.

We had my brother wear a beige/tan suit instead of the black tux the groomsmen were wearing because my bridesmaids were wearing champagne and it looked awesome! I would also do a darker dress for her but thats just me. I feel like a colored dress would draw your eye to that side in photos

My brother is my MOH and he's wearing the same tux and vest as the groomsmen, but instead of wearing a white shirt he will be in a black one and his flower will be a daisy instead of a calla lily, to match the bridal party bouquets.

My FH has my daughter as his Best Woman. She's going to wear a dress in a color that matches his suit/tux. I would say your bridesman should wear the same suit/tux color as the other groomsmen only maybe his accessories (tie, vest, cumberbund) should match the bridesmaid dresses.

My brother is my Man of Honor and is wearing the same suit as the groomsmen, but he will stand on my side.

However, I've always been to a wedding with a Best Woman who wore a black dress to match the groomsmen's black tuxedos.

I would have a dress the color of the tuxes and then have the guy friend wear the matching tuxes but add maybe a vest and tie the same color as the BMs (if not already doing that)

Personally I would match the bridesman's tie and/or pocket square to the color of the bridesmaid's dresses -- or heck, if he can get a suit in the same color and he feels comfortable in a non-traditional suit color, that could be amazing too -- and match the groomsmaid's dress to the groomsmen's ties and/or pocket squares. That way no one has to wear a more somber/brighter color than they're used to.

These are such good ideas! I love the idea of having the bridesman's tie/pocket square match the bridesmaid dresses....I hadn't even thought of that

My MOH's husband had a groomswoman and she wore the same style dress as the bridesmaids but in black. It looked very nice.

My maid of honor is wearing a navy suit because that is what she feels most comfortable wearing. BM dresses are navy.

My FH sister is his best woman and she chose to wear the same suit as the groomsmen. That being said, she could not fit in the rental tuxes, so she got a suit the same color as their tuxes and added piping the same color as the bm dresses and is Getting a blouse made in the same color as the bm dresses (eggplant). I bet she will look fabulous!

My brother was my man of honor and he wore a gray suit with a boutonnière that matched my bouquet and my BMs were in blush dresses. DH and his guys were in gray tuxes. They all complemented each other well, I didn't want the matchy look though.

You can really do it however you want. If you want separate colors for each side, you could have the groomswoman wear a dress the same color as the groomsmen's ties, and the bridesman wear a tie the same color as the bridesmaids' dresses, for example.

I've typically seen it where the grooms woman wears a dress in the same color as the groomsmen. It doesn't have to be the same dress as the bms though. Typically I've seen the bridesman wear the same tux as the groomsmen sometimes with different accessories.
