Are my BM gifts enough?

Finally mrs.jkr, on June 1, 2015 at 11:14 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

I'm just getting them robes, and I feel like people on here are giving their BM's a lot more. The robes are a pattern of their choosing with no monogram or "bridesmaid" written on them I was planning on just tying them up with ribbon. Should I add something to this gift? Maybe some chocolate of some sort? I really can't afford much... went over budget with the robes as is... but I could afford to get them something small from my personal money rather than from wedding savings. What do you think?

I have heard of brides giving so much too, but I have to draw the line somewhere after paying for the entire wedding ourselves. We certainly have a budget. Yet, early on, I considered this when I chose my bridal party, that I would have to factor in gifts to my budget, and if I couldn't afford it, then I shouldn't have them in my wedding. Personally, I think your gift is thoughtful and if that's all you can afford it is the thought that counts - and sure why not add a little box of chocolates as a special touch ... that would be nice.

For myself, I am spending the same amount that they are spending on their attire on their gifts (approximately of course). Example: Their dresses came to $150/shoes TBD but I'm sure won't be any more than $50. So, I will be spending about $200 more or less per bridesmaid/MOH. But that is what I can afford to do. It is a gift of appreciation and that is what should count. Not how much it cost or how many gifts they got. Don't count on my etiquette, this is just one person's opinion. One of the gifts I plan on getting them are Alex & Ani bracelets (which are really affordable and can range anywhere from $25 and up) that fit the relationship to the bridal party member. My MOH will get one that says something about being like sisters. My other bm's will get one that fits our relationship history. Maybe you have a little more room in your budget for one of these bracelets? If not I wouldn't sweat it. You do what you can do. Again, its the thought that counts.

I think the robes are really cute and a lovely gift! If you wanted, you could always include maybe a $5 Starbucks card (for a drink the day of the wedding while getting ready!) and a chocolate bar/candy of each girl's fave kind. But I think the robes are nice too. I just think it would be a nice personal touch if you know their favourite candy to add that, as it would make me feel special that you remembered/know my fave! Smiley smile

My friends are pretty minimalistic. When I was in my sister's wedding my gift probably added up to maybe $30, she was creative and crafty, but it still wasn't a big elaborate gift. So I know she won't expect anything big. My FSIL is 16, I'm not even sure she knows bridesmaids get gifts. Then my other two friends are not really the type that care about fancy clutches or jewelry or things like that. I spent about $40 per girl (plus I had two greeters I spent about $30 on). And that was all I could do. These are friends I don't see very often because they live far away, so they haven't really put a lot of time into the wedding so I don't think I need to spend hundreds on each.

I think maybe adding something small would be cute, or maybe even a $10 gift card to starbucks or something. Chocolates sound really nice. I really wouldn't sweat it!

I think that the robes are cute and a nice gift. Some people go all out because they can afford to, but you shouldn't feel pressured to. I think it's just the point of giving them something to show you appreciate them sharing with you and supporting you on your special day, and that can be accomplished without spending hundreds of dollars.

ETA: And I didn't even know BM got gifts until I started planning this wedding...

I think the robes are fine. But I like the idea of maybe adding a small gift card as well

I don't know if I consider this part of their gift, but I will be paying for their hair and make up for the wedding and will be purchasing them something to wear during the getting ready part of it all so that we are matching and looking cute in the pictures. I love your robes they are great!! I'm thinking either those, or fishing shirts with their initials monogrammed on them. But like others have said, your gifts are great!! If you want to add something small because it will make you feel better, then do it. We have a section of town here in Houston where you can find REALLY cheap but nice jewelry, so if that's an option for you, you can get them their jewelry for the wedding. Just an idea!

I agree with the others and think robe and chocolates would be a great gift! I'm going to give robes as well and can't decide on jewelry or some sweets. Id love to spend more but I'm already paying for their hair and make up.

The robes are a lovely gift. I would suggest their monogram rather than Bridesmaid on them, so then they are more suited for everyday use? I got a personalized reuseable water bottle in the last wedding I was a part of, and while it was a super simple gift, it was amazing because we used it all day leading up to the wedding! I also like another user's suggestion for $5 Starbucks gift card for day of, if that's something your group would like! It's the thought that counts Smiley smile

That's plenty. You don't need to break the bank. Add a handwritten thank you note and bam done.

I'm getting my girls very similar robes, plus some chocolate and their favorite Starbucks drink to sip on while we get ready. Smiley smile We're almost BM-gift twins, apparently! I also have very inexpensive wooden carvings of their first initial that I'll paint for them.

The robes are cute, I would be happy receiving that as a bridesmaid! I have been in several weddings. In one she simply just gave us our jewelry to wear and a personalized wine glass at the reception. At another I received a small ring box with my initials engraved on it. Then for my best friends wedding, she had a very small bridal party and we all traveled out of state for her wedding, she gifted us nice purses, a picture frame and jewelry to wear on the day. Any little token is special and thoughtful. I never once thought "oh I wonder what I'm getting!" It's enough just having the honor of sharing that day with them.

I think the robes are great. I think chocolates or something would be a nice surprise since they know the robes are coming. Maybe nail polish, a nice glass, or something not too expensive.

I think the robes are awesome, but if you wanted to do something inexpensive, maybe coffee mugs? I'm getting plain white mugs from Dollar Tree and decorating them with a Sharpie. There's a Starbucks in the hotel we're staying at so I plan on having them filled with their favorite coffee or latte and delivered to our room.

    Something like this-

Stealing the mug idea!! Thanks Trisha!!

I think the robes are great. I'm doing multiple smaller gifts rather than one bigger one.
