A little anxious about our caterer *Update*

Lisa Marie, on January 14, 2012 at 7:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 4

For our venue, we have to hire an outside caterer, but they limit us to about 6 that are on their list. So, we got prices from all 6 places and met with the one that was cheapest. We liked the owner and everything seemed great, so we sent in our deposit back in October. I emailed the even coordinator this past week asking her when we should schedule an appt to meet with them again and choose our menu. She sent me back a list of policies that seemed more geared towards brides having their reception at their actual restaurant. I emailed her again asking when we should set up a tasting and decide on our menu. Maybe I'll get the answer to my question this time around. I'm just a bit anxious because we haven't heard anything from them since they received our deposit. I'm assuming everything will work out seeing as they do a lot of work at our venue, but just nervous I suppose. When did you all meet with your caterers to do tastings and choose menus?

We haven't chosen our menu yet. The venue we chose has an exclusive caterer. We requested a private tasting before we settled on the venue.

The venue offers tasting and menu selection for its couples one time in March, April and May. So we're attending the March tasting and picking our menu then.

And I would be a little worried too - I would call them and make sure they understand that your wedding is not onsite and give them any other necessary details.

I was an off premise caterer for lotsa years, so here is my take on this. October is the the craziest month ever for a caterer; it's wedding insanity season, and just when you finish that, it's the holidays which are just as insane.

By now, they should be a little calmer, and should have the time to answer your questions to your satisfaction. They should also be very clear, obviously, that you're at an offsite venue.

Feb-March is a good time to do a meeting with them and pick the menu, talk about logistics, etc. I wouldn't be anxious yet, but I would let them know that you are concerned because your first response didn't seem to address your event.

    Keep us posted.

My venue is having us do our tastings at the 90 day mark for both of our receptions. (DW and our US reception).

So, I emailed the caterer back and asked her when we would be doing a tasting and informed her that we had sent in the deposit, but hadn't signed a contract yet or anything and asked about that. She emailed me back and said that they do tastings about one month prior to the event and that they would send me the contract in the mail to sign. The next day she emailed me again to tell me that we actually had to come in to meet with the owner to sign the contract. I'm fine with going in and I'd actually prefer that - but it worries me that they seem to be all over the place with their protocols for things. *Sigh* Since they were one of the caterers allowed by our venue, I think I'm going to email the event coordinator at my venue and talk to her about this. Hopefully she can ease my mind a bit because right now I'm a little nervous about how this is all going to play out. And seeing as it is the most expensive part of our whole day, that is not making me too happy right now!
