1st dress fitting was a nightmare need advice UPDATE

mrsrobinvalentine, on August 19, 2013 at 2:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

I know it's my fault, why when I lose weight my breast are the first to go. The seamstress said because my breast are too small, it would take restructuring the entire torso. She said due to the bling & lace, it will be costly. Then she went on to say that my shoes were too low that I needed an additional 2inches. Her estimate is $500 or more. Heck, I can get a dress on sale from DB for that amount. I stayed home Sunday feeling defeated & conflicted, I truly don't know what to do. And my FH doesn't understand why I'm so quiet. I told him that my meeting was discerning for me. We have some many other wedding things to worry about; now I have to worry about my gown. I thought this was behind me. I'm thinking maybe it's too late, but do you think I can sell my dress & buy another?

Sorry that happened. Can you maybe use those "chicken cutlet" boobie things? That also seems weird that she wouldn't just adjust the length based on your current shoes.

I guess it really depends on how much you love this dress. Is it worth making the adjustments or would you be just as happy in a new dress?

    Hi Robin!

It's absolutely NOT too late! I'm getting married in three months and bought my dress two days ago!

Before you decide to return it altogether, just do some more research (maybe check out davidsbridal.com) and pick a few things that you'd like to try on. Honestly I feel like that's half the battle.

Please send me a PM if I can help you in any way during this process. xoxo

I think you have time to look at other options to help you make your decision.

I just noticed your wedding isn't until February. A lot can change in that amount of time.

So just how small are you? How much too big is the dress? Was the dress ordered in the right size?

Can you put cups/additional padding in the dress? Also, when I went in for my fitting the dress was a little too long and they were going to charge $150 just to take the hem up, I just decided to buy a taller pair of shoes! I would make sure you've looked at all your options before paying the $500 or buying a completely new dress. Good luck!

I'm not sure how much you paid for your dress. But if it's going to cause you this much stress, I say try finding another one. You have the time. Also maybe try taking it to another tailor and getting a second opinion?

Why wouldn't she adjust the length based on your shoes? Thats really strange IMO.

Maybe try a second seamstress for an opinion.

Robin, I feel your pain.. My situation is a little opposite. My first fitting was a nightmare too because I gained too much weight and now I am working hard to get it off and get that dress zipped! I would take it to a different seamstress if you really love the dress... $500 is a lot of money.

I'd definitely talk to another seamstress or two. One that insists that you get other shoes rather than just hemming the dress is sketchy to me.

I too would talk to another seamstress... it seems very shady to me that she's telling you to buy another pair of shoes with higher heels rather than doing the hemming for you... you're paying her to alter your dress so she should do what you're paying her to do. And I don't know what the prices are like in your area but I feel like $500 is very expensive. I'm paying $400 for my seamstress and she's part of the boutique where I bought my dress from (and they sell high end stuff... Vera Wang, Romona Keveza, Reem Acra, etc...). She's also doing tons of stuff to my dress for me (hemming the lace overlay, the crinoline underneath, adding a bustle to my 2 foot train, and reworking the bust area since the armpit area was poking at me).

I'd look around for a few more seamstress for different opinions. The good thing is, you still have months to go before you need to start on the alterations on your dress.

You have lots of time I JUST had my 1st dress fitting on Weds and my wedding is in less than two months.

I would go talk to another seamstress. And if she says the same thing either, go shopping for another dress or see if you can add some "stuffage" to your boobies.

You don't need to stress you have lots of time still!

Definitely go to another seamstress, I would hate it if someone told me to buy taller shoes, if I did that I'd be towering over my FH! You should wear a height you're comfortable with and have the dress fixed to match you instead of you trying to do all these things to match the dress. As for the top, you should look into getting those inserts maybe, sounds like the person really just wants to make money off of you. If you still love this dress then I wouldn't give up to buy something else just yet. Good luck!

Thanks ladies, I'm going to get an 2nd opinion from another seamstress. Due to my workouts, my body has diffidently changed. My breast are smaller, my shoulders & upper torso is broader. I lost inches on my waist & buttocks. But my weight has increased, even though I'm toner. My gown doesn't fit the same. Because my dress has a lace on the train & front hemline, it can't be shorten without ruining the finish. Higher heels is one of my options. Since my FH is 6.4, my height isn't an issue. The dress is so structured that the seamstress is quoting such a high cost. We have some many other wedding stuff to get that I'm feeling guilty about buying another dress. My Fh just want me to be happy, he is giving me his complete support in my decision, whenever I can decide on how to proceeed

Not sure exactly what your dress is like, but from my experience, all dresses with lace on the hemline can definitely be hemmed. There is like an invisible hemline around your knee area where the seamstress can go into and shorten your hem from there so you can still get it shorter without ruining the finish.

Definitely look around for a better seamstress and, you know, you probably won't need to start alterations until about 2 months before your big day so you have plenty of time. Don't stress! Smiley smile

If your wedding isn't until February, I would postpone getting any work done on it right now. Your body might change again as you get closer too.
