Disagreeing Over Reception Music

Ashley, on April 7, 2021 at 6:28 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 7

Okay, so after postponing our wedding three times and now less than a month away, me and my Fiancé are having our first disagreement when it comes to the wedding. We have to give the music list to the DJ and my fiancé wants no rap music ( which I like, sorry not sorry lol) I want the atmosphere to be like a night club and he says it’s a wedding, not a club. I feel like I’m paying over 2,000 and I deserve to have music I like. I’m not talking a lot of cursing, it can be clean versions of songs. Also, it’s not like we won’t have any other types of music. My fiance and I love country music and we will have that, his moms side of the family like country, but none of my side of the family like it. So, it's becoming hard to please everyone. I’m not sure what to do?? Help please!

Are you expecting your guests to dance? Are they going to want to dance to rap? My suggestion here (and it’s what we did) is that maybe you split the list into background music used during dinner and music used later for dancing. If your guests are not keen to dance to rap then use that primarily as background music.

First, I agree with you that you should get the music you want. You both should. But you should also think of your guests too.

It's my opinion that any good DJ will have experience with this. Ours has an extensive collection of all kinds of music, and he knows when to play what. During dinner, he usually goes with more mellow tunes--not dancing music. Then during dancing, obviously dancing music (including clean versions of rap songs), then later, after elderly guests and children have gone home, he breaks out the more "adult" or "club" type of music.

You should both get the music you want, and a little something for everyone.

After your marriage, have a big party with a club atmosphere , and all the rap you like. ut most of your guests will not find it good background for wedding conversation or social multigenerational dancing at a wedding. If one family is big on country, is any of yours into classic R & B, great dance and background?

Hi Ashley! Couldn’t hurt to have a few rap songs 😉 We chose music that spanned generations like Michael Jackson that’s awesome to dance to but not too hard on the ears ❤️

Honestly I gave my dj just a base list of songs we wanted to hear and told him to play anything fun upbeat do I wish I gave him more direction as I felt I didn’t hear a lot of the music I wanted to yes however i didn’t have any complaints

Give your DJ a list that includes ALL the genres you like, and then let the DJ read the room.

We included all types of music including rap. We also let our guest know that after 9 pm the music will change to more of a "club" type atmosphere. My FH and I love to sing and dance and down right get a little nasty (but in a good way) we both have dancing backgrounds. The way i view it is that its your wedding and you should have a mix of what both of you want to ensure you have a great and fun time.My DJ looked at my list and immediately knew what we were going for and he came up with the 9 pm schedule and then at 10 pm guest can request songs and the music will be unedited. The cocktail hour i have a harp player and for dinner its more 80 music and then after that, its our music. A little bit for everyone
