Dinner Napkins?

Jenn, on October 7, 2015 at 9:55 AM Posted in Planning 0 17

Hey everyone,

What kind of napkins are you having at dinner? Linens or paper? Paper is a lot cheaper than renting linen napkins so we're thinking about getting some cute customized napkins for dinner.

Also, how many would you order for a wedding of 80 people? How many linens and how many paper, depending on which route we choose?

We are having linen because they are included with the venue. Not sure how many you should order...obviously a few extra but not sure beyond that!

Are you doing a buffet or a seated dinner. I feel for a buffet you can get away with paper if you want but a seated dinner should have linen napkins.

I know we are having linen ones since our venue provides that for us.

If you go to paper route, you have to think of the various uses for it. You'll need one for the place setting, possibly one for each dish (salad, main entree, and dessert), and one for each alcoholic beverage they may want (specifically these would be cocktail napkins). That's at least 5 per person if everyone only has 1 drink and doesn't need a napkin for anything else. This is something I would definitely over buy. Probably estimate like 8-10 per person (this is cocktail napkin and normal dinner napkins combined).

You don't know who is going to get messy and how messy they'll be. I know FH takes like 3 napkins just to clean something up (and I get annoyed). Honestly, linen napkins might be the easiest solution

We are doing cloth napkins for dinner cause of found them from a chef in Baltimore who was selling them for like almost nothing, & I wanted something nice to go with our nice plastic plates lol. We are also getting paper napkins for the cupcakes. I went to IKEA & found the color I wanted for $4 bucks I got 300 napkins Smiley smile

@VMDIZZLE those look just fine! I think maybe getting the nice linen-like paper napkins like those for dinner would be perfect, and then have the customized napkins with text on them for drinks and such. Thanks for the photo!

And thanks everyone else for your feedback! Unfortunately our venue supplies NOTHING but tables, and i believe cocktail napkins for the bar, but that's it. Everything else is up to us to organize. Our caterer does supply them if we want them to but I'm seeing if we can forego them with the caterer and get them cheaper elsewhere.

Thanks Celia. Do you know how many linen napkins would be a good amount to order for a wedding of 80?

We are doing linen but they are included with the venue. I think linen is nice but definitely price them out as they can be pricey. I am not 100% sure on the typical linen formula (someone else may have a better idea), but I was told for 100 people to have 150 linen napkins.

Thanks FutureMrsBrbr, so I would probably order about 115 for 80 people or so.

MoonRide, where did you sell them afterwards?

I agree; 100-110. Mostly, they are either at the place setting or the flatware is wrapped in them, so you don't need a lot per person, but you want some extra, and you may want to have bread baskets lines with them too.

We had cloth ones. They are not that expensive if you buy rather than rent them, and resell them afterward.

My venue was all included (whoo-hoo!) so cloth tablecloths and napkins were included.

You can try linentablecloth.com. They have linen napkins for 5.89 / dozen so depending on how many you order you could pay less than $75 and then possibly try to sell after the wedding for $50 to make some of your money back. The price to rent napkins is ridiculous at some places if you don't want the standard white or black napkins.

If you decide to go with cute customized napkins, Totally Promotional offers really nice linen-like napkins to keep a high-end feel but with the convenience of paper.

In the case of disposable dinner napkins, I plan for 1 per person + 20%. 100 dinner napkins should be plenty in this case. (Keep in mind you may need more if you plan to use these with drinks and/or cake!)
