Dinner music at reception?

KPizzle, on May 5, 2016 at 10:31 AM Posted in Planning 0 23

Maybe I'm way over-thinking this, but what kind of music are you planning during dinner at your reception? Did you just let your DJ/band decide, did you provide guideline? I need to let my DJ know, but I don't even know where to start with this.

We have a band, but they are taking their break during dinner to also eat so they told us they would hook up a playlist of their own, or we could provide them a playlist of songs that are special to us. I would suggest just like lighthearted songs, or soft jazz, or just nice background music. I'm sure your DJ could handle this for you, or you could think of some "must have" songs that are special, but don't really go well with the dance party part of your reception?

We're playing the same music we're playing before the ceremony. It will be old school love songs Smiley smile

I'll probably just let the DJ decide - he's a pro so he'll know not to do anything too loud or wild/crazy for dinner music.

After our reception started we had a traditional Mariachi band play around the venue for about 45 minutes as tables were released to the buffet area and began to eat. After that our DJ played appropriately toned down music. We had a couple of meetings with them so they could get an idea of what we liked/didn't like and provided us with a packet of paperwork that would also guide them in their music selection for us, but we did not hand them over a playlist. I honestly don't even remember any of the songs that played during that time because we were constantly being pulled in a million directions by guests wanting to greet us, take pictures, etc.

Thanks guys for the recommendations. I definitely don't need to add anything else to my plate right now. I'll let the DJ decide.

A lot of people do Sinatra/Buble type music. We're doing a lot of Coldplay, Mumford&sons, etc. music we love but isn't really dance music

I ask couples what kind of genre. Very few times couples would give me specific songs. Its just about what kind of vibe you wanna set. Ive played swing, jazz, top 40 and country so.

My venue comes with a DJ, but my dad is absolutely hell-bent on live music during dinner. We're likely going to hire a jazz trio, then switch to DJ after dinner

We asked for Vitamin String Quartet (or any other string quartet) covers of bands we like. We gave him a few mp3 files and he did the rest. He also played a few slow songs.

We're using a playlist of Buckethead songs for dinner. It's one of the touches that I put in for FH as he is a huge fan.

We're going to have country and classic rock played during cocktail hour and dinner since they're our favorite genres but aren't the best to dance to. That way we can still incorporate the music we like.

We're not using a dj so we're gonna go indie vibe, nothing too upbeat while everyone eats.

I thought this was something straight forward but my advice to you would definitely be to talk to your DJ about this!! In his online planning form, I put oldies, country love songs. By "oldies" I meant motown. By country love songs, I meant modern country songs - there are SO MANY good love songs on country radio these days, which I love!! I ended up with a bunch of 90s country songs haha. Ugh. I know its just background music, but still, people are actually listening to it!

The DJ gave us a choice of Standards (think Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, etc) or Adult Contemporary (think Michael Buble, Norah Jones, etc). We picked Adult Contemporary.

We're using downtempo/chill music for before the ceremony and during cocktail hour/dinner. After that I told the DJ to drive.
