Dilemma: Black tablecloths...

Laura, on January 4, 2020 at 3:04 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 23

I've run into a problem. My venue only offers black napkins for free. That means $1 per napkin of any other color. I don't want to spend hundreds on napkins. So that leaves me with black napkins. Doesn't that also mean that I need black overlays or tablecloths? I hadn't quite pictured a wedding reception with black table coverings. Has anyone had this? Do you have any suggestions to lighten things up without getting charged $200 in napkins?

My friend had black tablecloths and it was beautiful and elegant. I did red satin for mine, I got so many compliments on how stunning it looked.

What how are your wedding colors and what color tablecloth were you planning to use?

You don't have to have tablecloths and napkins be the same color. You could have black and white or black and a color.

This is my palette... Unless I only want black napkins, and the rest pale colors... I have to do long white tablecloths with black overlays. Obviously, not what I was aiming for... maybe it will look dramatic - I don't know...

Maybe the table will work - if we do the napkins like the photo - and do white overlays? I just have to keep the napkins somehow...

You could purchase your own napkins. I bought like 150 napkins for under $60 from efavormart.com But free is always better, you could do whichever table cloth color is your dominant color for ur color scheme with black napkins

I would skip doing a black overlay and only have the black napkin alone (like in the pic). I wouldn’t bring in any more black on the table with your color scheme.

The venue has some darkness to it already. So that’ll work with the black napkin. And the rest of your color palette will help lighten things up.

What if I just asked the napkins to be placed like they are in the color palette photo... let them be black and not care. Do white tablecloths and white or champagne overlays?

You and I were thinking the same thing! And unless the tablecloths are see through - I could skip the overlay all together - and just do a white table top. The other thing is that they usually do black overlays on the buffet - but I can ask that those be white also. Then my tables would all be white - except for the napkins for a dark grounding effect.

    Thoughts?

I agree! The problem that I am running into is that I can't change the black napkins and my color choices are everything but black - even my guys will be in gray. lol! But, I'll think about combos and maybe stumble on one I like. Smiley smile

That works. There’s no need for overlays. The white tablecloth alone looks much more elegant.

Oh! Just an FYI - this is a formal second wedding. But, there will be no band or DJ - no garter, etc. It's a lovely dinner with excellent food and wine. So more of a formal dinner. There's an after party for the party portion of the night. lol! Our parents are older and it is a second wedding. I thought you should know so you aren't wondering about the type of event.

We had white tablecloths with black layovers, but with white napkins. I wouldn't pay a $1 each per napkin though. I would have colorful centerpieces in order to add color. I have included what mine looked like.

If you want to keep your light palette (and will have light tablecloths, I’d put your menu on top of the black napkin to hide it. Both either on the plate, or next to it.

Muah ha ha, problem solved! 😊
