Different ideas instead of cake

MacKenzie, on June 4, 2020 at 7:11 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 20
So my fiancé and I want to do something a little different than cake. We’re not sure what to do so if anyone is going to also do something different, your ideas would be appreciated! We were thinking cupcakes or cannolis?! Comments?

We're doing tiramisu! My fiance isn't a huge fan of traditional cake, though he loves tiramisu, so we went with that. We're also doing a smores bar since our venue has a fire pit.

If you don't want cake, I wouldn't serve cupcakes since it's the same thing just presented differently.

The sky is the limit as far as desserts: cheesecake, cannolis, pies, cookies, mousse, cinnamon rolls, donuts, etc. You're only limited by your imagination and budget.

My brother had ice cake at his wedding and my brother-in-law had donuts. I had contemplated having a s'mores bar or ice cream bar, but we were already having a candy bar and cake so I thought that was enough. My husband also vetoed an ice cream bar because he was worried the ice cream would just melt. It probably would have been difficult to keep cold because our wedding was in the middle of the summer on the hottest day of the year so even though the wedding was inside in air conditioning it was still pretty warm inside.

I've seen so many different variations from a full dessert bar with assorted pastries - eclairs, cream puffs, fruit turnovers, cupcakes, etc. An Ice cream bar is also great idea... really fun with sprinkles, and nuts, hot fudge, strawberry, and caramel sauces, whipped cream, etc. Some folks do cookies, doughnuts, and other easy to grab sweets. I'd love to hear about what you come up with!

We had to postpone our big reception, so I think we will actually have a cake to make it feel more wedding-y but our original plan was to have a few passed desserts (like hors d'oeuvres, but with cookies or tarts or something) and then donuts for people to take on their way out.
At our mini reception this year, we're having an ice cream truck.

Cupcakes are becoming a common alternative. I’ve seen donuts a few times. I think cannolis would be cool.

So my husband isn’t a cake person but we still wanted a little something for it to have some tradition as we are already steering away from so many traditions. We are having a little 8 inch two tier cake made for cake cutting ceremony then 4 dozen cupcakes. Each mom and grandparents are making our favorite desserts and then we ordered donut holes as fillers

I would say cupcakes would be a good bet, plus you can just order a ton for an "event" and not get charged the wedding prices. My brother had a cheesecake bar, where they bought a tons of cheesecakes from Costco and then let people add their own toppings. My fiancé and I are hiring an ice cream truck for ours!

My FH and are getting married on 3.14 next year. We're having a pie bar Smiley winking

I would suggest picking a dessert you two like and serve a variety of that. Everyone is doing doughnuts these days, but you could offer a variety of cookies, and tarts. Mini bundt cakes are popular in my area. I've seen cupcakes quite a few times too, so I would go with cannolis if I had to pick between the two, especially if they mean something to you and your FH. (Maybe you had one on your first date, your wedding reception is at an Italian restaurant, your family is Italian or something like that?)

More ideas: If your wedding is in the summer, it might be fun to lean into the season and serve a variety of ice cream bars and have a small cake for cutting. If your family has some kind of dessert tradition (grandma's cobbler for example), this could be a fun way to acknowledge how someone has inspired you.

I think food is such a fun way to show your personality as a couple! I hope you two find something you can really enjoy.

We're doing a dessert table! A small two tier cake for the traditional cake cutting, mini cupcakes, cake balls and apple cider donuts! I've found across weddings, most people don't even eat the cake (except me) but prefer small bites since you have been eating and drinking basically all day.

The FH loves cheesecake so we are doing that plus the candy bar with all types of goodies because of Halloween. What about pie? Do you like pie? Also, there's lots to choose from donuts, cupcakes, lava cakes, tiramisu, ice cream, croissants, etc.

Honestly, all of these ideas sound amazing! My fiancé and I were considering Bundt cakes from Nothing Bundt Cakes. They're so moist and fluffy and almost everyone I know likes them. Even better, they can come as a big cake or small like the size of a cupcake.

We're doing a small one tier cake for cutting, and either cupcakes or a sheet cake to pass out for guests. And then a "his and her favorite" type of thing! His favorite are churros, and mine are french macaron cookies!
