Difference Between A Tux And A Suit

Amber, on August 6, 2017 at 6:47 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

Today my FBIL (the best man) mentioned that he would rather wear a suit than a tuxedo because he feels he would be more comfortable. I had no clue they are really that much different. Anyone know what the difference is? Anyone going with suits instead of tuxedos?

I'd google to get a good idea of the differences.

We got suits because they are more comfortable, and can be tailored. We purchased ours from Macy's and had a great experience with them.

FH wants suits over tuxes, but I'm not sure what the difference is. I just let him pick what he wants!

I think the neckline or something is different. We got talked into tuxes when we went in for suits. Oh well lol

LOL I've been asking this question for two years and still don't know. The only difference I know is that tuxes have that little satin piece along the collar whereas suits don't, but it feels like a really stupid differentiation. Like, y tho?? Literally no one will care.

We went with suits for my fiance and all the guys because I just wanted a specific gray and that was what the guy at the tux shop said he could do.

The tuxes have a different cut with jacket length, they labels (most in satin) were a suit does not and are worn with a vest or cummerbund with a bow tie. The labels also have a difference in peaks. (Suits don't have peaks). Basically a suit jacket is similar to a jacket with 1-2 buttons and are worn during the daytime. A tux can be single or double breasted with 3-4 buttons and are worn after 4pm.

I think another big difference is that many guys will buy the suit and have to use again. Very few people can use a tux, or extra tux. The price to rent tux may be close to price to buy suit.

It's pretty easy to search online for an explanation of the differences.

    http://www.mytuxedocatalog.com/blog/tuxedo-questions-and-answers-what-is-the-difference-between-a-tuxedo-and-a-suit/

There are etiquette guidelines about when tuxedos should be worn. The most basic is that tuxedos are evening wear. This rule is broken all the time by couples trying to pretend that they are having a black tie wedding, but an afternoon ceremony.

The pants are different as well - no belt loops so could be less comfortable for some guys in the waist vs suit pants with a belt

I think the shirts are slightly different too - more formal for a tuxedo, and neckties are not worn with tuxes.

The jackets are different in terms of structure and tuxes have tails typically. The shirts and pants are different as well in addition to the etiquette associated with tuxes. And cummerbunds and bow ties! If you're not doing a proper black tie wedding, do suits. This way everyone (guests and groomsmen/groom) will be comfortable in what their wearing and at the same "dress code" level. If the wedding party is in tuxes and no one else is, it can create awkward tension with how formal/informal the wedding is can make the guests feel underdressed and/or expect more and hold it to a higher standard.

Seem like one would not be more comfortable than the other. We went with tuxes because we wanted the formality. Plus H wears a suit pretty often and didn't want to wear it again for the wedding.

@Muriel- a black tie wedding is when everyone wears a tux. I think it's perfectly acceptable for a groom to wear a tux. We in no way we're trying to pretend to have a black tie wedding.

Yes there are differences. But you can buy a tux and have it tailored just as you can a suit and the costs can be very similar if you choose. You can buy a value priced tux at $100 and have it tailored for about $80 or more to make it fit like a more expensive designer one. I've done this for my son several times throughout the years. He's getting one for my weddi g next week. Also you don't have to wear a bow tie you can opt for a satin-y silk regular tie with a tone-on-tone print tie (like white paisley on white) and it will look very nice. I get it some don't have options to wear a tux...but what about New Years Eve, the theater (opera, symphony), holiday (Christmas) party, cruise on formal night, dinner just for a romantic fun (role play) 007 evening ;-D.

My FH is going to get a tailored suit, mainly bc he'll use it again after the wedding. There are very few instances he'll wear a tux ever again.

FH wants suits over tux. He feels they are more comfortable and relaxed. I think they fit our theme better and a tux would be too formal. I think either are fine though.

Thanks everyone! I thought it was funny that my FBIL is worried about being comfortable when he doesn't have to deal with hair, makeup, jewlery, long dresses, heels, spanx, strapless bras etc like the women in the wedding do lol
