Did you tell your kid's dad you were getting married right away?

Just curious... My relationship with my kid's father now is txt's here and there only about my daughter. "What time are you picking her up?", "She got all A's on progress report", etc. He is a good dad but our relationship isn't great.

Well mine broke into and hid in my house and hit my FH with a baseball bat. Needless to say ex was arrested. Wasn't an easy situation. Now he seems okay with it but wasn't sure how he would react being that he went crazy with the idea of me even dating!

He can't get custody from you just because you're remarrying...Unless your FH has a criminal history or a sex offender. That is the only way he would win that battle.

How long did it take for him to be okay with your relationship? @Wendy

My BFF's exhusband of less than 2 years is engaged to another woman and the only reason she knows is through Facebook. They live in the same town and have a verbal agreement about custody.

I know everyone is entitled to living their life how they choose, but as a parent I think it is your responsibility to let the other parent know who is going to be in the child's life as a major presence.

I do want to tell him and will. I just won't tell him the exact date but I will let him know that I will be getting married.

If you don't tell him, you're putting your daughter in an awkward position where she may feel she has to lie to him and/or feel like she is betraying him.. Tell him. I know it will be horrible if he tries to take you to court but he won't win, as others mentioned.

That's a hard situation. My ex-husband and I good friends as well as his wife (she is in my wedding). On the other hand FH ex (not wife) is drama central and has no custody rights to the girls so we haven't told her anything. Our girls have nothing to do with her because she is verbally abusive to them.

We did not tell the mother of my FH's son, just because she likes to start drama, she knew we were together, and that we were living together. Once I posted it on Facebook, she had someone watching our profiles (since neither of us are friends with her), saw my profile picture of the ring and got super mad. She called. wanted to argue over something completely different, saying it wasn't because of the engagement and then had her boyfriend go buy her a random ring as a "birthday gift" and that was it. We didn't tell her, but she made sure to find out. She has since been blocked on all social media lol, as well as anyone we know is connected with her.

@ MJ I still haven't told him the exact date and it's 2 weeks from today. I did inform him we would be in MO that weekend and that I would need to switch a weekend with the kids. I'm sure he has heard but I didn't tell him. I don't want him to ruin our day!

I still haven't told my Ex-H. He got married a few months after we were divorced and didn't tell me (up till then he had denied he was dating that girl). I knew, but did not really care at that point. When he found out I was dating someone (my now-FH), he flipped out and his wife had to restrain him on my front yard because he was acting like he was going to fight him. We obviously do not have a good relationship. I haven't told him for fear that he will not drop my son back off after his visitation (it has happened before) or shave his head (he gives him ridiculous haircuts at times) or something else just to be difficult. I am not sure if my son has told his dad (I figure I would have heard something by now if he had) because I don't like to ask my son too many questions about what goes on at his dad's house because I know how much it stresses him out when his dad grills him or talks bad about me. Bottom line, I think you know why you aren't telling your ex. No one else really knows your situation, so trust yourself. And for what it's worth, when we went back to court to modify visitation and child support I asked my lawyer if I would need to tell him that I was getting married (not engaged at the time, but definitely heading that direction). She told me no, that I only needed to inform him if my son would be living with a sexual offender. So maybe check to see if your custody agreement requires anything more than that.

@Tiffany too - I'm not telling him the exact date in case he doesn't feel like dropping her back off. Will definitely look at our agreement.

Thank you everyone for your input! Smiley smile

My FH has two kids from two past relationships. I texted my FH sons Mom right away because we are really good friends. His daughters Mom FH eventually told her but not right away. She didn't tell us when she got pregnant. We weren't in a huge hurry.

I'm really glad you asked because I'm also curious about this.

My ex-husband and I have been to court a time or two, so we don't have the most trusting relationship. We have one daughter together (7 years old).

I've been in two relationships since he and I divorced three years ago. One was a year long and my relationship with my future husband has moved quickly (only dating for a little over four months at this point). We're in our early thirties, and I guess at some point, you know what you want and don't see any reason to wait. He's an incredible person and I'm so lucky he thinks the same of me.

We're planning on getting married in June 2017 and we haven't told my daughter yet. I don't want to tell her until I'm ready for her dad to know (but I think he saw my ring at the switch off last time). I'm starting to feel guilty about having told so many other people, family, friends, and coworker's and my daughter doesn't know. She adores my FH and, entirely without prompting, she has told me she hopes I marry him, so I'm not worried at all. Blended families are just tough all around.
