Did you sell your wedding dress after the wedding?

sarabee, on April 5, 2016 at 1:17 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 32

Okay, I know this sounds bad- but I'm only wearing the dress once, will have the photos to prove it, and don't think my kids will want to wear it (I know the style of my mother's is completely different than the styles today).

However, I wonder if I should keep it for sentimental value. My concern is that it will just be kept in a box and left untouched...

I tried to sell me dress of regret for waaaaay cheaper then I paid for it, but no one wanted it. I ended up donating it to Brides Against Breast Cancer. There's assist program that takes wedding gowns and makes funeral clothes for stillborn babies, premies, and very young children in general, but they were on an intake hold at the time. It is VERY hard to sell a wedding dress. Especially if it's altered and used.

I always see people trying to sell their wedding dresses and they hardly get any interest.

I don't plan on selling mine after the wedding. That's probably the one thing I'll keep for sure. I guess for sentimental reasons. Plus it's way too beautiful to let go, but I guess I'm a little bias.

I sold mine. We tried to sell NotFroofy's, but didn't get any interest, even though I think hers was more beautiful than mine.

I don't know if I'd ever be able to sell my dress immediately after the wedding. Sentimental value and the fact that it is the most beautiful dress I've ever seen LOL Smiley smile

I feel like everyone tries to sell their dress for nearly what their cost was on places like preownedweddingdresses.com which is probably why they don't get much interest. Trying to sell clothes in general is hard.

I'm going to put mine in a shadow box as decor for my walk in closet.

I'm selling or donating. I don't have a sentimental feeling. Even if I sell it for $500, whatever, I can use that money somewhere. I bought my dress off tradesy. Selling online requires knowing the market value. Very few dresses will sell over 50% what you have paid. I've seen dresses on preownedweddingdresses, tradesy, stillwhite, etc sell very quickly, writhin days of posting. Brand, size, alterations and price all play a role in the price. Research your dress now to see what it sold for in past sales.

I second Rachel's suggestion that maybe they're difficult to sell because brides want 90% of what they paid for it. Ain't gonna happen. I craigslisted for months. Anybody who would pay over a grand for a dress isn't buying a used one.

Those reasons are exactly why I'm looking into renting my dress or purchasing at a wedding consignment shop in my hometown. I'm not superstitious about wearing someone else's dress and I don't want to have it in storage or any of the other typical things. If I can't rent for as cheap as the dress I want from DB, I'll buy and then try to sell it. Like PP said, even if I only get 1/3 of the price, that's more than I'll make with it sitting in the closet.

My sister is getting married in October. And she sold her regret dress for more than she paid for it! Not saying it will happen for me, but I'm definitely gonna at least try to sell mine and recoup some of the cost. (Not that I have one yet.)

Not sure what religion you are but if you plan of having your children baptized you can have their outfits made out of your dress

I asked my mom if she was glad she saved her wedding dress. She said she's never looked at it, has no idea where it is, and that it was a pain to move across the country several times. That sealed it for me!

I might try and sell mine. I was thinking of asking 1/3 the original cost since it's used and might not be exactly what someone else wants anyway. (Mine will be simple and inexpensive anyway). Or donating it. (That can get you a little $$$ as a tax write off if you itemize.)

If you are sentimental - you might consider saving a swatch of the fabric or lace or an accessory that your daughter can incorporate into her gown or an accessory.

I may donate it or may try to sell it. We will see! I can't see me caring that I kept it!

I thought about that when I was buying my dress, but my grandmother bought my dress, alterations and preservation kit. Iam so thankful I could never resale it after her doing all that.

I'm keeping mine, if for nothing than it's the most expensive souvenir of one of the best days of my life.

I was planning on trying to sell mine all along if at all possible, and then my sister accidentally stepped on the front and ripped a giant hole in the top layer of tulle at the reception. UGH. Don't think anyone will want it now! lol

I am sentimental, but I also know I will probably never take it out again, especially if its packed up and preserved in a box.
