Did you register for China?

Finally Mrs. F, on August 3, 2015 at 10:31 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 28

Hi! I'm trying to figure out if we should scratch the China from our registry. It seems like such a waste. I mean, I'm all for China, but it seems unnecessary in our lives right now and just soo expensive. I don't want to end up with a couple pieces of a set that we then have to finish buying. But my family feels it's tradition to put a China set. FH and I registered back in like March, and I thought nothing of it, but now we were thinking to just delete them. I'd rather someone buy something else off the registry. Did you ladies/guys include China when you registered? What were your thoughts about it?

Nope. We absolutely do not have the space for china in our home (2 bedroom cabin with a grand total of 1400 sqft), and we're not going to do an expansion on our house any time soon. We will *never* formally entertain like that, so it's not worth the storage space.

I included everyday dishes (Fiestaware), but am not including China. We don't have a need for it right now, it's super expensive and FHs grandmother has so many sets that we could always borrow one of hers of we really needed it for a fancy dinner. If you don't want China, I wouldn't register for it.

My family tried to push it, but we aren't going to. First, we're in an apartment and don't have the space to have it anyway. My parents also have 2 sets of china plus a set that was my grandmother's, and FH's grandparents have a set. We're most likely to take over hosting duties from them, so I'll likely end up with theirs and see which of the other 3 sets complements it best. We're getting nice enough day-to-day plates that if we don't end up with someone else's china, it's fine, too.

Yep. We'll entertain a lot during holidays and such and I really love the stuff we picked out - and it was really reasonably priced. Apparently people really love giving it, too, because we got five sets for the shower.

I love to entertain and hope to host many family holidays, but I'm still not registering for china. We are just not that fancy.

Nope I had the same thoughts as you. There's so many more practical things I needed. I also am not a huge fan of entertaining other than the general apps, chips and dips. I don't do dinner parties and if I did, my guests can eat off of the same stuff FH and I eat off every day. I'm not trying to impress anyone.

I did but I was sort of forced into it by my mom.

I chose really simple white china and then Christmas china. Because Christmas.

No we already have formal dishware so we really don't need it. I am including some nice glasses though, since we only have about 2 left (all the rest got broken). I don't think it's necessarily something you HAVE to have, these days.

I did. My mom had a great china set that was old but when she passed away step-father got ahold of it and let's just say it will never be seen again.

I registered in hopes of making this an heirloom china years and years and years down the road.

Nope. We don't even have a house or dining room so I don't see the point. Also when my aunt moved to Florida a few years ago she gave me hers which is timeless, white and will work if/when we do ever need it.

edit: Also, I don't even have room for that. It's in a box at my grandmother's house because my tiny house is about 600 sq ft

Nope! My mom and dad have accumulated like 5 full sets of China. Like the serve ware and everything lol. We never use it and it's just displayed everywhere in her house. We will be getting like 2 or 3 of her sets and my brother will get the others. I registered for a nicer everyday set. It costs more than "normal" (like fiestaware) but less than China. It's from Kate spade, also!

Nope. For one thing, we're not fancy people. I feel like it will be at least a decade before we would even have a need for china. Also, we live in an apartment and have no where to store China. I'm sure some day it will be something we invest in, but not now.

We did get a nice decanter and some gorgeous glassware. Clearly we have our priorities straight lol

No. My mom told me that if I ever wanted china and crystal, I could have hers.

    Don't plan to.

We don't have a ton of cabinet space, but we're also not the china type. Don't get me wrong, I love china but I've always been a no frills/unnecessary expense kind of person (aka I'll just be honest, a cheap ass) so it'd be really weird eating off of fine china on our current hand me down kitchen table lol.

I did matching everyday dishes but no fancy china because we don't have the room for it.

I'm too lazy to own any dishes that cannot be put into a dishwasher... so no china for me!

We registered for upgraded everyday dishes and we registered for some additional china pieces as well. We currently have a 4 piece china set and registered for extra settings, and a gravy boat. I love china and we actually have a large hutch that houses my great great grandma's china, my great grandma's china and both of my grandparents wedding china. I've always loved china for some reason so my grandparents decided to pass it on to us since we'd appreciate it.

ETA: we're pretty sure that my great great grandparents and my great grandparents sets aren't safe to eat off of.

I was given my grandma's china when she passed away. I never had room for it until our house now. It was always stored away. FH and I love to entertain but never use it. But the set is absolutely beautiful!
