Did you know he was going to propose?

Was your engagement a total surprise? Did you talk about getting married before and you were just surprised by when your partner proposed? I'm curious to hear other people's experiences.

Total surprise - I am divorced and he was the "I am never getting married" type - his parents had a messy awful divorce and it was just something he never wanted to get into.

We both knew it was going to happen pretty much right from the very beginning. HE would bring it up all the time which always made me mad because I didn't want to ruin the surprise of it lol. We dated for a little over 2 years before he proposed, and there were a couple of times I thought he might do it. It wasn't a huge surprise when he did do it, though, because 1) we were on vacation in Costa Rica for my 25th birthday so it was a good occasion, and 2) unfortunately he left his phone by me one night a week or two before our trip and he got a text saying something like "are you still interested in this ring?" with a picture which luckily I DIDN'T see (although he got a different ring anyway), I was so upset that I saw that because I love surprises and I was so mad that I ruined it. Of course I didn't know for sure WHEN he'd do it, but it was on my mind constantly after that. I didn't tell him that I saw that text either because I'd hate to make him feel bad. Anyway, it was still the most perfect proposal and I was SO happy - it was my birthday and we went for a walk on the beach at sunset and I was taking pictures and he said "okay, try to get one more picture of the waves hitting the rocks and then we'll start heading back" so I took my sweet time trying to get the perfect shot, and then when I finally turned around he was on his knee! 😍 I love reliving that moment ❤️

I knew it was coming but had no idea when. I had no idea that he had bought the ring. The day he proposed I had no idea what was going on. We went to Menards and then to dinner nothing out of the normal. Then he asked if we could get out and take pictures with Christmas lights. Of course it was freezing cold in northern Illinois. So like a champ I got out of the car and froze at every location we stopped at. It isn't til the last Christmas tree that we stopped at he got down on one knee and asked. I froze a second to take in the whole event and of course said yes!! 7 months later we will be married!! Yes I planned everything fast but it helped that everything fell into place very nicely!!

I didn't know. I mean, I'm pretty sure it would be coming at some point in the future, but I didn't know when. We talked about a future together and getting married. The funny thing is, after we he proposed, we started talking and found out when we knew we wanted to marry each other. He and I met and became good friends over a year prior to us starting to date. I knew within 2 months of us dating that if we could manage the transition from friends to dating that I would most likely end up marrying him. He told me that he knew on our first valentine's day. It was a matter of just waiting until we were ready. And he proposed on our 3 year anniversary.

We started discussing marriage when we moved in together. We were both on the same page with the timeline and what we both wanted to happen and when, which was we wanted to live together at least a couple of years before getting married. When he actually asked I was still surprised because I didn't expect it when it did happen, and then to find out he'd been looking at rings for the 6 months before actually asking me was still a surprise too. He didn't propose with a ring though. We went together to pick one out.

We talked about it and he said he had a plan but it probably wouldn't happen until around or after our anniversary. He did it 6 months before and it was a total surprise. I thought he was joking and laughed and said wait are you asking something. I think he told me he had a plan to throw me off so I wasent expecting it. Or he did have a plan and decided at that moment in time it was the right time. Either way total surprise

I definitely knew, he’s not very good at keeping secrets lol! We had bought the ring a few months before and he’d asked me to keep it safe (he was away at school and he didn’t want anything to happen to it) and I told him where it was. He came back for winter break and I went to look for it and it wasn’t there, so I knew it would happen soon. We went on a picnic Christmas night and I knew it was gonna happen. I still cried like a little baby though!

We talked about getting married, and knew we wanted to. He proposed about a year and a half after we moved in together. I didn’t necessarily expect it to happen on the day he did it, but I knew it was (hopefully? Lol) coming since we started working with a realtor and looking to buy a house a little while before he asked. FH bought the ring on a Friday and planned to propose that weekend during a camping trip with my family, but couldn’t wait literally one extra day lol and he proposed to me that same night. It made sense though, because he honestly cannot keep a secret so it’s amazing he even lasted a few hours after he bought the ring 😂

Lol my story is a mess. We moved in together after dating 6 months, and from there on we were very serious about being together forever. After a little over a year of living together, we found out we were expecting. We had been talking a lot about the future but for some reason when he proposed when I was 3 months along, I found myself unable to say yes. I was afraid he was only doing it for the baby, even though we had talked about it before we got pregnant! Also, he did it very informally and for whatever reason that rubbed me the wrong way. I blame hormones. So I asked him to do a redo, because of our circumstances I needed to feel that he was serious. He, understandably, was a little offended that I didn't think he was serious. I was all over the place. Part of me wanted to get engaged asap, and part of me didn't want to rush anything while I was pregnant. We talked about it all the time, and I consider that time period to have been sort of "pre engaged". When our daughter was a month old, we went out together for the first time on a date night. It was new years eve. I proposed to him, and it was finally official. We were both in the right place. We weren't really in any rush to start planning, so it wasn't until that September that we set a date. We were like "hey, this weekend is nice, same time next year?" Then in November we found out we were expecting again! We chose not to postpone and now our son will be 2 1/2 months old at our wedding.

We talked about marriage and I knew it was coming (thinking it would happen in 2016). I just didn't know when so when it did happen (in December 2015), it was a total and beautiful and amazing surprise since I was not expecting it to happen so soon. He really did a a wonderful and perfect job with the proposal and the ring.

I knew everything, we had picked out a ring together online. He is terrible at keeping things a surprise so he ended up telling me when the ring had shipped. I didn't mind really, I'm just happy to spend the rest of my life with him.

We’ve been together for 8 years so the topic definitely came up but so much time had passed I was okay with not getting engaged at all if it came down to it. We were on the second platform of the Eiffel Tower and we kept making the same circles over and over again and he was asking me the same questions! I was trying to tell him a rainstorm was coming and we should probably go (we had been there over an hour) and then he did it! Total surprise.
