Did you have you e-ring and band sautered - pros and cons?

Kat, on November 15, 2013 at 2:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

Mine is driving me nuts - they constantly flip and twist away from each other in opposite directions. BUT I had a ring sautered before at a reputable jewelry store and wasn't 100% happy with it. Once its done it's done. Is there any alternatives, like some kind of latch on the bottom side maybe?

I'm in the same boat Kat. Mine are literally pointing different directions as we speak. I'm kind of bumping because I'm curious too.

My friend has her soldered together. It's her engagement ring and two bands. Major bling put together and she did it so she didn't lose any of them and it was easier to care for.

I don't know if I'm going to do it, because when you look closely, you can see where it's been soldered. Maybe a reputable jeweler can do it without seeing the solder marks, I don't know. I also don't know where she had it done, and I've never seen anyone else's, so I have nothing to compare it to.

    Please don't do this.

Yes soldering is reversible but in order for your rings to look perfect again thy will need to be filed to get the soldering off of them.

Also, if something happens to your ring, it happens to all of them. Example, if you crush you hand and only the top on is messed up, all of them need to be ripped open to fix one which causes a problem.

I work for a major jewelry store. We advise against thing whether it is our rings or not. Remember, what happens to one ring will happen to all the others if anything were to happen.

I won't be soldering mine. I did last time I was married and wished I hadn't. I wanted to wear just the band sometimes.

I think I will, because I will likely be getting a ring enhancer as opposed to just a band that can be worn separately.

I'm not going to because, like Paris, I want to be able to wear them separately.

I'm going to most likely. I have 2 wedding bands, one on top and one below my e-ring and they'll drive me nuts if they're all flipping different directions. I know lots of women who have theirs sautered together, including my mom, and none of them have any problems.

I'm going to take some time to decide, but i have enhancers as a wedding band also and will more than likely want to get them put together. i think it's going to annoy me, but i want to wear it for a while first to find out for sure before i decide

I'm about 99% sure I will get mine welded together. It came as a set, so I just feel like they are meant to be together. Plus, I want to have it engraved, and feel like that would be super hard if not impossible if they were seperate..

@ Zoe that sounds soo cute. My engagement ring is a heart and the band is a bigger heart of diamonds that really gives it a wow factor, imo. I'd love to see yours! Smiley smile

I couldn't... It would void Tiffany's lifetime warranty of my platinum e-ring. I also want to be able to wear them separately.

I plan to. My very trusted jeweler told me the way they do it, it's temporary. Seemed like they are just connected in the back. Not sure though.

I didn't even consider if I ever wanted to just wear the band. I believe Kay said something about weights that keep them from sliding around. This is what someone in another forum said:

My wife has rheumatoid arthritis so both engagement ring and wedding ring have to be larger to fit over her knuckle, causing them to spin when on her finger.

Instead of soldering them together, she actually had two little balls inserted inside each one. The balls rest against the underside of your finger and prevent the rings from spinning.

If you were going to have them soldered simply to avoid the spinning, looking into this alternative instead. At least you can have the balls removed (neuter your rings, I guess) if you do not like it. I am not sure about reversing soldering.

I won't be. My e-ring was designed by FH and has a small peek-a-boo diamond in the band that would end up being covered by being soldered. I just plan on getting a band made to match the contours of my e-ring setting

I didn't even know this was a thing you could do... wouldn't it still spin...? just spin together...?
