Did you consider the season when picking your dress/attire?

Rosie, on July 26, 2021 at 8:42 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

I've seen a few posts lately about whether to add sleeves to their dresses for a cooler-weather wedding (I've posted that myself as it happens!) and it got me think about to what extent you considered the weather/season/environment/venue when picking your dress.

We are supposed to be getting married (covid willing) in mid-September in the Southern Highlands, which tends to be quite warm and mild during the day, but gets cold as soon as you step into the shade. I have always loved the look of sleeves but there weren't really any dresses to be had here in Australia which had them, so I just bought extra fabric and decided I might have them added by my alterations lady. Now, with the threat of covid lockdowns continuing, we might end up having to postpone, in which case I probably won't need them after all.

Either way, I have a cashmere wrap with my new initials embroidered on it that I can potentially wear if I do get cold and that's my solution.

Likewise, I picked my shoes wholly on sentiment, and they are not really suited at all to our ceremony location, but I don't care!

So! Were you practical, did you pick your dress based on what you expected the conditions to be, or did you think, screw it, this is the one day of my life I get to wear x (a skintight strapless gown, a giant ballgown, a long veil) even though it's going to be y weather (below freezing, icy, extremely humid, taking place on a sandy beach, etc) and gosh darn it I'm going to do it regardless of how impractical it ends up being!

If you're already married, did you wish you'd been more/less practical? Tell us all!

I just chose a dress I liked without thinking about the season, which worked out because we postponed from late April (when it's just getting warm) to early September (when it's pretty dang hot)! Even if we postponed to winter, I'd probably not alter the dress and just throw on one of my late grandma's fur stoles for any outside pictures.

Awww, that's so good! What a great attitude to have. I have to say, I'm a reptile who gets cold easily, so I did briefly consider whether it would be warm enough, but not sufficiently to change my mind about the dress! I knew since it didn't come with sleeves that I might not like the alterations to add them, so I was conscious when picking it that if I didn't like it how it was, it wasn't the one.

I’m in the US Chicago suburbs and autumn can get pretty unpredictable. We are getting married October 30th, 2022. Around Halloween it has rained, it has snowed, it has been sunny and kinda warm - any weather you can think of is possible around the time I’m getting married. I’m planning on having an outdoor ceremony in the afternoon and PRAYING for a nice day cause it’s my dream to get married outside. Anyways, I’ll be wearing a sleeveless dress - I just don’t like the look of sleeves for me. My venue luckily provides those outdoor heaters and if it is cold I can tough it out for like the 10 minutes that is the wedding ceremony.

Haha, I think many of us do things like this. I said the same about our wedding - my fiance wants us to have it outside if at all possible, and I figure I can cope with the cold for 20 minutes!

I'm not sure about your situation where it might SNOW though! Although to reassure you, my mum said it snowed on her wedding say and no one even really noticed since you're too pumped up on adrenaline to notice!

Halloween of 2019 I think it snowed lol, last year it was decently nice! Maybe this halloween weather will suck so 2022 it will be perfect! We have a plan shall we need to move inside, but my venue is an apple orchard. I’m not willing to compromise on the date cause that will be 8 years since the day we met - it’ll be a perfect day no matter what!

The only things I made sure of when getting a dress were:

    1) that I could sit in it and dance in it

    2) that it wasn't too heavy (we're getting married mid september next year and it'll still be pretty warm)

    3) that I could have two people walk me down the aisle with it on (aka not ballgown poofy)

Yes I am getting married in April which can be rainy/snowy or can be 70 degrees so I wanted something heavy so I would stay warm also my dress has a lot of flowers on it which I loved cause it reminded me of spring

Our date is the first week of October, so for Michigan that could mean a snow, freezing rain, or 80 degree weather lol. According to the past forecasts it's usually been around 60 degrees, so I'm hoping we have nice weather that isn't too hot!

As for my dress, I just wanted something that wasn't super heavy because I get crazy warm (and sweaty 😫) super quick. Our ceremony will be on a brick patio and pictures will be outside on grass so I'll probably choose a block heel, even though I don't love the look of them. I am not coordinated enough to wear heels in grass without managing to sink terribly.

I just chose a dress I liked! I was slightly worried I might get cold later in the evening (late October wedding) so I bought a fur wrap just in case. but it ended up being 75 degrees that day!

Haha, number 3 is too cute and very thoughtful, I am going for a huge ballgown skirt and my dad is TINY (I'm the tallest in my immediate family at 5'5"!) I don't know if that will be a pro since he won't take up much aisle space himself, or a con, in that you won't be able to see him in photos due to the size of my skirt! I guess I should have thought of that but I definitely didn't. I've wanted the type of dress I bought forever.

Aww, how lovely. Is it a tulle, 3D flower with many layers type dress, or a jacquard, heavy beaded fabric type dress?

Haha, we're opposites. I get cold SUPER easily and can't warm up, if only it was possible to share a little of each other's responses to weather, wouldn't that be perfect?

I should totally have got block heels but I wanted the shoes I wanted, even though they're totally utterly impractical!

Not really because where we live it is hot and hotter than Hades. Plus I run warm anyway. Just pick a style you love and have the appropriate temperature at the venue, whether that means shade under trees, or heating or air conditioning in a community center.

My criteria is it has to be easy to move in because I’m not changing into a second dress, and it has to be lightweight fabric because I get hot easily.

Yes, I definitely didn't alter my vision to be more practical, but then I might have done, if we'd been having a beach wedding or something more extreme - I keep imagining how you might sweep up a bunch of shells and bits of coral if you chose a lace dress on a beach, lol.

I chose my dress based on what was pretty, looked good on me, and was in my budget.

I did rule some out for not suiting the venue/aesthetic - there was a beautiful ballgown with a huge pick-up skirt that was breathtaking on me. But it didn't fit the "feel" of the wedding (in an open-air art museum/garden, with an overall minimalist aesthetic.)

I didn't really think about temperature because I figured no matter what I chose, it would be hot.

No I am probably going to wish I did but maybe not because it's a gorgeous dress. I'm getting married in August and it tends to be hot in the day and cooler at night. My dress is big and poofy and I have many layers. It has spaghetti straps but I don't think that will keep me cool.

I know what you mean - I guess always having had a specific dress in mind (although I was open to hating it when I went to look!) I wanted a venue that would match it to a certain degree. To be honest I'm not sure there are many, or in fact ANY venues in my local area that would suit the vibe I secretly wanted, because we live in the wrong country! I always wanted a grand house vibe - like a huge estate, castle, mansion, chateaux, villa kind of feel - where everyone stays in opposite wings of the house to get ready and you can watch everyone gathering for the outdoor garden ceremony from the windows before sweeping down a grand staircase.

Of course, here in Australia we don't have have any true houses of this sort so that was never going to happen, but I still wanted that sort of dress!

And I also agree that stress or anxiety or whatever on the day will mean you're hotter than usual or just too hyped to notice how you're feeling.

Haha, I'm in a similar boat. And because I love the look of them and I was anxious I'd be cold, I had sleeves added, but we now are likely to move our wedding date and it might be a LOT hotter! And I agree, I think all that tulle and whatever under the skirt is likely to be warm, even with a spaghetti strap.
