Did I just get ripped off?

So I went to my first dress fitting today. The lady quoted me $550 for a hem, take in, add cups, and bustle. I declined the bustle so it's now $400. Is this the going rate for alterations or did I get ripped off?

I have an extremely simple dress. Chiffon with a lining. I had cups sewn in, hem, 3 point bustle, and the waist taken in at a local boutique in BFE for $266...

I paid 372 for alterations on one of my dresses and 585 for the other one. I expected it to be that high though.

    I'm near Chicago

My alterations were 200.00 for my gown to be taken in, hemmed, bustled and cups added. I dunno 400.00-600.00 sounds a bit excessive, I guess it might depend on where you go too.

Mine were through David's Bridal alterations (so I knew they'd be pricey but my dress has raw edged chiffon that I felt more comfortable with them handling themselves) and that same amount of work was only like $250-300 on their "couture" end

You paid how much for a hem?!?! Omg my hem was 30 fricken dollars. Yes- I'd say you're getting ripped off. But I live in rural pa where a lot of things are cheaper. Go to someone independent and not associated with a bridal shop. They are outrageous and shop around

I guess it depends on how much altering your dress needs, the fabric of the dress etc.

I have heard that smaller, local seamstress are a little cheaper than larger bridal stores.

That's not bad. They're quoting me like $400 + (more than I even paid for my dress lol) but as others said it can get pricey

I was told my total alterations would be between 200-300 but I only really need it taken a little bit

I'm in NJ and I paid $400 for it to be taken in a little bit, bustle, and cups. Ridiculous.

I'm paying $710 for hem, bustle, take in body and illusion, take out boding sand add sticky so stays in place. I had priced at three places and all similar so went w girl that seemed most excited and had lots of documentation of past work, although slightly more) I think it depends on the amount of detailing on dress and material and of course how many layers! It also doesn't matter most of the time if taking in one size or three as same amount of work needed. To me my dress was one of the most important parts of the day, only get to wear once! Smiley smile
