Did I just get ripped off?

So I went to my first dress fitting today. The lady quoted me $550 for a hem, take in, add cups, and bustle. I declined the bustle so it's now $400. Is this the going rate for alterations or did I get ripped off?

Mine were $250. Do you have a huge dress (ball gown) or something complicated that could drive the price? That seems crazy to me.

More importantly why are you declining a bustle...

My alterations are costing me $850, but it's all inclusive and I don't have a cap on how many fittings I can go for. I'm in NYC though, so that might be much higher than the national average.

Mine was $330 for a corset back to ve added and a bustle. My dress has layers so the bustle is a bit complicated from what the guy explained to me.

I was figuring it would be close to a thousand for mine. it has bead work at the bottom and no matter how hard I try, I can not find comfy 4 in ch heels (not that surprising actually..)

This thread is making me dread getting my alterations quote. Top will need to be taken in 3 sizes *cries quietly*

It kinda depends...my dress was a full heavy lace and the underlay was satin. So it was $400 for a hem, bustle, take in a bunch of seams, and add cups. In in NoVA

@Blonde, my dress sounds very similar to your and that is almost exactly how much I paid in alterations. Last minute hem, bustle, and taking it in 2 inches because I lost weight was significantly discounted because it was a friend who altered it.

Mine was $465 for a hem, bustle, straps added and taking it on the waist with a fully beaded bodice. Our alterations lady was amazing and I wouldn't change a thing. I've always heard to expect around $300-$600 on alterations and I am in Indiana.

I got the emerald package for my dress at $600-something.

For the dress itself we are hemming, adjusting the bodice bust fit and adding cups, lowering the bodice under the armpit area and adding an 8 point bustle, 3 on the lining and 5 on the outer tulle. The bodice has lace and beading.

My dress also has an adorable sheer jacket with lace and beading that will have the neckline lowered and overall altered to fit better.

Add to that a lace keyhole back from the dress designer that was dyed ivory and beaded to match my bodice.

My 2nd fitting is Tuesday and I can't wait to see it!

I don't think so, it can get pretty pricey.

Sounds reasonable. Mine are $700 for similar things - cups, hemming, bustle, and some cute fancy straps that are removable.

I'm in a much lower cost area, my hem, cups, bustle, and darts are running under $350. I live in Ohio.
