Diamond vs. gemstone vs. cubic zirconia

When I was younger I heard the rule was the cost of an engagement ring should be 1 month’s salary. I wouldn’t marry a man who did that. It’s jewelry. There are so many better uses for money, in my mind. My engagement ring is a tiny blue diamond. It cost $250. I’ve been looking at rings because I’m...
When I was younger I heard the rule was the cost of an engagement ring should be 1 month’s salary. I wouldn’t marry a man who did that. It’s jewelry. There are so many better uses for money, in my mind. My engagement ring is a tiny blue diamond. It cost $250. I’ve been looking at rings because I’m going to have a heck of a time finding a wedding ring to go with it. It makes me think... would it matter to you if your ring wasn’t a real diamond (cubic zirconia) or a gemstone that wasn’t a diamond at all? I love colored stones. It wouldn’t matter to me at all if my ring were cubic zirconia or a gemstone. I might actually prefer it. I am a camper. I have a very physical job and have already really bent my engagement ring. I’m not at all into material things. I’m just wondering how everyone else feels about it.

I don't think it matters what the stone is or how much the ring costs, it's the intention behind it. I did want a diamond, and I did want a certain shape, but I did not want him to spend a fortune and I didn't care how big or little it was. He got me a gorgeous ring that he probably spent too much money on but again its the message behind it all.

I have always been in love with gemstone rings 😍 I just don’t care for traditional diamonds. That’s just me.
My wonderful FH picked out a GORGEOUS morganite ring for me, and let me tell you how much I ADORE IT!!!!!!

I think when it comes down to it, it’s everyones personal preference. I don’t think it’s wrong to want a traditional diamond, but I don’t think it’s wrong to want something nontraditional either. You gotta discuss that with your FH before hand 🤷🏻‍♀️

Your ring is gorgeous by the way!!

Honestly it would matter to me what my ring was, but I wouldn't care if someone else's was diamond vs. cubic zirconia. Any other jewelry I wear is super cheap, so I wanted my ring to be the one thing was real diamonds. But I really think it's just a personal preference.

I told my fiance I'd rather have a down payment than a diamond. Coincidentally, we found the perfect house and spent a lot of our savings to go halfsies on the down payment! He proposed to me a few weeks later with a really simple diamond band. It's simple and sparkly, but not flashy. I'm excited to create a one-of-a-kind stack of rings over the years. It's not about keeping up with the Jones', it's about your style, preferences and love!

If I knew how to post my ring I would. It’s a diamond. The center stone is the stone from my grandmothers wedding ring who passed when my mother was young. The diamond is small but it shines bright. I told my FH that the only stipulation I had for my ring was that I wanted people to be able to see it. Lol! I’m not materialistic at all so the size of my ring is perfect.

Your ring is beautiful. I also am not into diamonds and I can't see spending that much on a ring even it is the one I want to wear every day for the rest of my life. Our engagement rings are so simple but so beautiful to me. Our wedding bands go with her engagement ring (the simple band with just blue opal) much better than mine but I don't care about that either. I can't wait for her to put that band on my finger.

I am with you! I picked this ring out as it is my birthstone which is aquamarine and I LOVE it. It's all about what you're happy with. This was less thab 300 and I couldn't be any happier

The 1st picture is the ring I’m wearing right now. It’s a $9 CZ ring from Walmart with tape around the bottom because it’s a size 5 and my finger is a size 4 and I can’t be bothered to do a more official fix for that on a $9 ring xD. It looks pretty good in person, one of my coworkers already said she liked it.

The 2nd picture is the moissanite ring we’re planning on getting me once we have the money. It’s $561, which is a far cry from the $5,000 diamond ring I fell in love with xD)

I wanted a gemstone not because of the price but purely because I'm obsessed with rubies. My whole life all my jewelry has been rubies. It's my birthstone. So I was dead set on a Ruby ring and it also happened to be cheap aha.

I ended up with a diamond purely because my friends don’t listen 😝 From working in jewelry I am always wary with diamond buying. I would have preferred a pigeon-blood ruby

FH wanted so badly to buy my ring from Tiffany’s. I couldn’t see spending that kind of money on a ring or any piece of jewelry. I found a jeweler on Etsy who custom made my ring very similar to the one at Tiffany’s. It’s a double diamond halo around a large aquamarine center stone. I love it 💙

I have a diamond ring because I GAWKED at this designers Instagram for years. I’ve been with my fiancé for just shy of 6 years and I always joked about getting one of these rings but as time went on (and I grew impatient) I told him i didn’t care about what the ring looked like and I’d marry him if he gave me a ring pop! In the end he bought me the ring of my dreams because he knew how much I loved it. Was it necessary? Absolutely not! I’d love him no matter what the price tag was. I DID appreciate the trouble he went to to make me happy though.

I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't be a little disappointed with a cubic zirconia, but that doesn't mean I'd have declined my fiance's proposal (heck, I proposed to him 6months prior to his proposal with no ring!). I don't have a preference over diamonds or gems, but I do love my very small diamond ring!

My engagement ring is a pink moissanite, it was back when the patent still existed and colored moissanite was still a new concept so I probably overpayed for the stone. Anyway, it’s a small .50 pale pink stone that sparkles like crazy and we splurged on a gorgeous floral halo(it looks like petals from the side) in rose gold. I call it my Blush Baby.

My wedding ring is pretty much my dream ring. It’s an antique gold ring with all that gorgeous patina still on it(age spots on gold), filigree sides, leaves in the shape of fairy wings cushioning a beautiful opal. To think someone a long time loved this ring, that had the same tastes as I do. A jewelry maker saw the same vision in their head of what a beautiful ring it would be!

I’m considering selling my ering after the wedding just because my wedding ring isn’t a band so Blush Baby would have to go to my right hand anyway. It’s a lot to think about!

As for the question, it absolutely wouldn’t bother me if it wasn’t a diamond but it would have to be a stone I do like. I love colored gemstones.
